Fuel Door Release Cable Install to Latch

I have an '07 4Runner, and yesterday found out that the fuel door release cable has came out of the latch (so to open the gas door, I swing the latch up and out of the way, and pull on the cable with my hands).

The latch interface to the cable looks somewhat asymmetric, so before I just try to shove it back in... does anybody know what that cable as-installed should look like (or take a picture)?

This has happened to me twice (about a week apart!), but it has been fine for the last year or so. I have no idea what casued it, but you are right, it fits right back in the groves on the release lever. If I remember correctly, the cable slides over from the right side of the lever--it was easy to do (I did it while filling up). If you need pics, I can take some tomorrow for you.

Oddly, I just had to reattach my gas flap lever cable last week. It's actually very simple. First, you have to remove the 2-10mm bolts on bottom of the plastic shroud that the flap lever sits in; remove the wiring harness for the dimmer rotary knob, and you should now be able to flip the shroud down so you can see the backside. The flap lever simply slides down and out. The cable end looks exactly like a bicycle cable with a little cylindrical lead tip which fits into a matching cutout on the flap lever. Simply maneuver the cable end into said cutout, and CAREFULLY slide the lever back into the plastic shroud. Reassemble balance in reverse. If you are still having trouble by lunch time, I will shoot a couple of photos for you but I think you shouldn't have any problems.

Hmmmm.. Ok, well, I had to remove it in order to properly feed the cable into it's little housing. But no worries as it was extremely simple.

The handle/latch assembly inside of the vehicle is actually held onto the metal knee panel by a plastic clip and you can remove it to get easier access to installing a new cable.
