Fuel pump

I know your post is a few months old so I am not sure what you decided to do but I am also looking to replace my fuel pump. After some research, I believe the part number and price you listed (23221-31050 for $320) is just for the Denso pump and not the entire fuel pump housing, sending unit, filter, etc. Did you order this part and if you did, can you confirm what you received?

I found part number 7702035112 which appears to be everything included for $643.80.

I am still debating on what to do but I am thinking $643 for the entire unit is way too much. I am thinking I may just replace the pump and sending unit. I thought about also doing the filter while I'm at it but there's some more info on the filter in this thread that's making me think it might be unnecessary:

Either way, its still < $300 if I source the pump with strainer (Denso from Rock Auto), Fuel Sending Unit, Fuel Filter and a new Tank Gasket (all OEM from my local Toyota dealer).

thanks for the question. as not turns out, i did not have to replace anything. earlier, i had thoroughly cleaned the throttle body. i DID NOT DO ANY RESET AFTER THAT. apparently, there is a recommended procedure to do reset the computer. i just kept driving it. took a good while for the symptoms to disappear. btw, been running strong and smooth since.

so, you may not need to replace anything either. do the throttle body cleaning first.

My 08 has 209k on it and mine is starting to show signs of failure.

Yes, I linked to it on Amazon (~$109) in my post above as did Dr. Coffee (since RockAuto charges shipping, it's essentially a wash). But be aware that you'll need to remove the old pump from the housing and install the new one as shown in the illustration.

Also note the two-stage fuel filter system; the one called "fuel filter" is in the housing (pic in my previous post) and then there's the one which comes with the fuel filter and kind of resembles a coffee filter. So if you want a new fuel filter too, you'll need the housing, which is Toyota p/n# 2330050120. I paid ~$ 38 at a dealer's online parts store.

I've seen a lot of videos and writeups for how to get to the fuel pump assembly, but not much about how to take it apart after that. I don't see anything about it in the FSM either.

I don't. I took mine to a shop and they did the assembly.

How to rebuild the fuel pump tank assembly - anybody done that?

I had a hesitation under load issue with my 2004 V6 that I initially thought was due to fuel starvation (fortunately it was due to a wonky MAF). Getting ahead of myself, I pulled a fuel pump assembly out of a donor vehicle with the intent of rebuilding it and replacing the electric pump with OEM Denso at the very least. I have taken the fuel pump assembly apart to see where the fuel pump lives and wonder how to remove the OLD electric original fuel pump. It appears to just be a friction fit at first glance, but doesn't want to come out. Am I not seeing a lock fitting or fastener or does it need to be gently hammered out? Would appreciate advice on replacing the original electric pump and top filter housing from anyone that did this before. Thanks!
