Fuel tank leak.

Hey everyone! I have a 2002 Sport Runner. I have a fuel tank leak. I just checked it with a smoke machine today and its somewhere on top of the tank. It also smells like gas after I drive and I get the evap codes that come up. Have anybody experienced the same issue?

My mechanic says that it is probably rusted out around the fuel pump but theres no way to tell for sure unless you drop the tank. Anyway he says theres two options, get a new/good condition used tank or get it fixed in a shop that fixed fuel tanks. Basically what they do is put a crapload of epoxy on the top of the tank which doesn't seem like it will last very long.

So if any of you had the same or similar issue please chime in. Just not sure whats the best way to deal with this. Rockauto has a new tank made by spectra premium for under $300. I can get a used tank for about a $100 from the scrappers. Trying to call some JDM parts places up but its hard to come by since only 2001-2002 models had that tank.

Thanks in advance!

I had the exact same issue. Smell of fuel, evap code p0442. I had to pass emissions quicky so I dropped the tank and it was rusted through around the breather and a hose that went into the top of the tank. Around the fuel pump was solid. My fuel filler tube assembly was also rotted so I had to replace that, from the dealer $350 . I epoxied the tank and it lasted about 10 months. I found a good used tank $150 and problem solved. I hate rust. Hopefully you only have to do the tank. Hope that helps.

edit: I just noticed you're in Ontario, I am Toronto. I had a hard time finding a good tank from the local scrappers. There is a place that imports good tanks from the south. The one I bought was mint. I can dig up the name if you're interested. Good luck

It would be awesome if you could find the name of that place! Btw I did replace the filler neck which was leaking as well. I don't really want to drop the tank multiple times, I want to do the permanent fix the first time. It sux that we have to deal with all the rust around here...

Thanks for chiming in man!

dont bother with a repair, get a new tank. or used tank. and before you put it in clean it off and paint it with a good epoxy paint to protect it and keep it safe.
