Gas mileage

Hi all again,
So I wanted to update this thread after I had a longer experience with the 4runner. I took it to the dealer a while back to ask them about the milage being so bad - 13.7 MPG. One of the techs told me that it had to "break in" and that it would get better. He explained that the computer system fed more gas during the break in period. I thought this was BS in a big way and I told him that. He said to come back at 5,000 miles and see how it was doing.
Well I am just over 3,000 miles and I am now getting 15.6 - 15.8 MPG and it does seem to be getting better. I used to get about 240 - 260 miles per tank and I am now up to 310. I have no idea if he was right, but if he is, why the heck did no one at the dealership tell me about that? Why were there no articles from Toyota talking about the change?
Anyway, wanted to let everyone know and see if anyone else was experiencing this.

I live in Kansas and do not have the stop and go conditions of Boston, from new I have always averaged 17.3 city, with a low of 16.8 in winter conditions here, and my current high of 17.6 after doing quite a bit of highway last weekend. When I first got it I reset it on pure highway driving and after about 30 minutes the average went from a high of 26 down to a low 22, with 23-24 being a majority.
So for me the numbers have been spot on, if not a bit higher than what was reported. I never experienced such dramatically low numbers during a "break in" time. Your current city numbers are probably about right for a high traffic urban environment, how are your highway numbers now? City seems more prone to variance as everybody experiences different city conditions, highway should always be more constant.

Hi guys, I have some update on gas mileage for my truck 
Like all of you pro's on this thread said it all depends on so many factors.
I have made a few post's concerning my gas mileage also ( noob that I am )
And this is what I got from my noob posts.
I have found a gas station that has zero ethanol in my area. Shell V power premium.
On my second gas filled tank and I get an average of 18MPG now. I don't know if it's the truck breaking down at 8k miles but that's where it is now.
My shop moved out of the city and I do 35% highway and 65% road. I think I got the driving style to a point I feel ok with. ( half grandpa style and rest normal driving when you need to step on it ).
So basically what I am saying is the same thing as you all have been saying since I made my first post on this great forum
Thank you all and I hope I can have the time/money to make some more mods on my truck that I absolutely adore even more now.
Will be going on a trail trip with a co worker in the last week of May, and will post some picks after. I can't wait ! Fishing camping hunting coming this summer

I tracked my mileage using an app on my iphone for 1 year. My typical driving is 30 miles each way to work driving on a rural highway with general driving and a couple of road trips thrown in. My stats are: $3713.36 spent, 1067.05 gallons, 18.7 mpg, 19,954 miles.

Been scanning this thread as I just got my 2013 T4R and also am seeing gas mileage pretty low and I wasn't expecting it. In fact, the GX-460 V8 i just turned in before the T4R, I averaged about 15.5 - 16MPG. And my previous 4th Gen V8 also got better gas mileage. The new T4R is getting ~14 MPG. (mostly city driving)
However, I understand all the different factors and how they can make a big difference.
Has anyone tried an Air Filter mod? Like simply putting in a K&N filter or some other high performance one?
In my 4th Gen, i put in a K&N and also used a small drill bit to 'perforate' the top of the air box. Also, having the sport edition at the time, i did the same "perforation" to the faux hood scoop. All in attempt to get more cooler air in which I believe can help with efficiency.
Just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on the air filter. I'm probably going to try a K&N first and see if that helps. I've also heard Royal Purple engine oil can make a diff ( I used in the 4th Gen T4R as well)

Notwithstanding a lot of other really good points that are relevant to decreased mileage, you've been asked at least a couple of times, haven't seen an answer. If you swapped from a P Metric to an LT tire and you are still running 32 psi it is going to hurt your gas mileage.
What's the tire pressure?

Just about 17 even driving mixed. Daily freeway commute to work is about 10 miles each way.

That still seems a bit low unless you're driving in heavy stop and go traffic and your local roads are hilly. How many miles on the odometer? Are you taking a computer reading or manually calculating? If computer have you reset it after driving off the lot? I dont think I've had a tank under 16mpg... 17 yes. I've gotten over 20 on the highway. Over 6,000 miles on the odo now. My day to day average would be 16.8-17.4mpg as my commute is short and some hills. Double check tire pressure as well.

We picked up a 2010 sr5 2 months ago. 80k miles. Stock everything. Wife averaging 22mpg. Has. 20 mile commute averaging 35mph. It's Mostly stop and go highway. We've had it as high as 25mpg cruising at 65-70, no ac. Key to us getting good to us gas mileage, watch the Eco light! I know I piss off the guy behind me sometimes, but Its a challenge to keep it on when taking off from the light.

I have a 2013 SR5, fully stock,with roughly 3k miles (after my latest road trip). I usually get around 18-19mpg (prior road trip). I live on base, about 15 or so miles from town so any decrease due to stop/go driving I can 'recoup' while driving the ~15 mile straight trip to town.
If I drove 80%-90% city conditions, I'm sure it would be around 16mpg. ND is very flat, which helps with the MPGs. To/from town I drive about 70-75mph. I'm not sure if the break-in period excuse is true or not. If so, I hope to see an increase soon!
On a recent trip to northern MI, I reached 24.2mpg! I was floored! Conditions were 55mph across northern WI and the UP. Both were very flat as well. (My Fuelly page is below.) I couldn't believe the fuel economy I was getting, but driving so slow was making me crazy!
