Gas near $2 by Thanksgiving?

I would like to say that the pressure is coming from the automakers but who knows. Interesting article though...

Gas may be headed back near $2
Industry analyst sees prices between $2 and $2.50 by Thanksgiving.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The recent drop in prices at the pump could pick up steam, driving gasoline sharply lower in coming months.

"I'd say $2 to $2.50," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service. "Once you get past Sept. 15, it's really a downhill game."

Kloza said so far the average cost of a gallon of gas peaked this year at $3.036 on Aug. 10 and has come down largely due to diminishing hurricane fears.

"There's just nothing happening in the tropics, and the market had priced in all sorts of calamities," he said.

The motorist organization AAA reported a nationwide average of $2.82 Tuesday, the lowest since April 20.

Online gasoline price survey site Gasbuddy.com shows Wednesday's national average at $2.80.

Another analyst pointed to a 60-cent drop in wholesale and spot prices the last few weeks, noting consumers should see a similar drop in retail prices in the coming few weeks as the decline works its way through the market.

The drop in wholesale and spot prices would translate to retail gasoline prices of around $2.50 to $2.60 a gallon, analysts said.

"The levels that were in place were never justified to begin with," said Mark Gilman, an analyst with The Benchmark Co. "This is a bit of a return to reality."

Gilman said retail gasoline prices of around $2 a gallon by Thanksgiving were certainly possible, although not likely.

He said crude prices would need to drop by about $20 a barrel to have that effect, and he just didn't see any major catalyst that would cause such a decline over the next three months.

Kloza said several factors are behind the recent gasoline price declines: the end of the summer driving season, which reduces consumer demand for gasoline as well as the end of seasonal federal requirements on gas that makes the cost of importing and refining it cheaper.

Little big cars ...
The price of gasoline's main component, crude oil, has also been falling in recent days.

Crude oil, accounting for about half the price of gasoline, closed below $70 a barrel Tuesday for the first time since June 20.

Oil fell further Wednesday after a government report indicated surprising growth in oil and gasoline inventories.

In Central NY we are still at $2.93 as of yesterday. Its sad when we think we are getting a deal at $2.69...hopefully it will keep going down.

I'm in central FL and I have an unfair advantage for gas prices because I have a Sams card and our sams has a gas station but the average is 2.72 and I paid 2.68 yesterday, and I know the price has gone even lower today. I would like to see 2.00-2.50 by Thanksgiving but thats very optimistic and as the analyst said for companies to bring the price down that much price per barrel would have to come down about 20 bucks per barrel

Well, your already at $2.68 so $2.50 isn't that far off for you...a long shot for us

You guys spending less than $2.70/gallon got it made. It's $2.85 here, and that's Costco gas. I hoping we'll see $2/gallon, which means more trips to the Sierra for snowboarding. :)

As long as it's less than $3, I'm not going to complain when I've spent $3.40/gallon before, $60 fill ups. I remember when it first crossed the $2 mark, after a steady climb from $1.50. Those were the good 'ol days, less $30 fill ups. :bigok:

I paid $2.55/gal yesterday in Little Rock, AR. Lowest in the area is $2.52 that I've seen.
I paid the same in Little Rock on Saturday (Murphy Oil on Bowman). Two places had the price, but most of the surrounding stations were $2.78, but they have dropped to $2.73 this week.

Good luck with that estimate... oil is still hovering around $70 a barrel and could still increase again this year as winter heating season approaches and Iran plays hardball.

Until crude prices fall significantly (like 20% or more) I don't think we'll get anywhere near $2 a gallon.

I just purchased gas for $2.46 yesterday in NW Ohio. I saw it for the same price at other major gas stations (Sunoco, BP, Shell, etc.).

It will probably jump $0.20 overnight sometime soon....

Yeah... the price will go back up soon enough. The overstock of oil and gasoline is just a rumor someone started to drive the price of oil stocks down a little bit so they can buy in. After the holiday weekend, the gasoline supply will drop off again and push prices back up. Even when the price of gas comes down, we're being manipulated by the filthy rich! :biggrin2:

$2.61 last night at Costco. Very exciting!

It is still $2.78 at the Mobil/Exxon's around town but I don't see many people at these gas stations.

Only time will tell if the "oil analysts" are correct in believing a price decrease of that size.

Here in Eastern Pennsylvania the price is currently $2.63/$2.73/$2.93 for 87/89/93 octane. At current prices $2.50 is not that far away but $2.00 may be realistically out of reach even at current prices.

All that has to happen is a large oil refinery shutdown for a problem or "unscheduled maintenance" and gas prices will stop their decline. Hurricane season is not over yet either so people should not discount that possibility as a factor in oil prices.

Hey, I am all for lower oil prices but I also think that seeing is believing when it comes to lower fuel prices.
