Gas Tank Capacity?

Next time my miles says 0 to empty I will take a photo of my odometer and then another right before I fill up. You'd be surprised at what's left..

THIS is what I'm talking about, basically... I didn't start this thread looking for info on how low I can run my tank lol.

I just found it odd that my indicator was very low (just before the light would come on) and I would only get 18gal out of a "fill up".

[/B] As it was told to me years ago, an empty gas tank or one that is very low on fuel has more explosive capability vs. a tank that's full.

Fumes are more abundant in a near-empty gas tank.

I can say i've never thought about it from that perspective. I've been into cars all my life and it's always been a "to protect the fuel pump" thing for me.

I've been horrible about fueling regularly.
it drove my wife nuts when I would drive around on "E" all the time.
Since I got my 4R, I've been working in Easton, Pennsylvania...
which is right on the border with Jersey, which has less taxes on gas. (30 to 40 cents cheaper per gallon)
So I now fill up on Wednesday every week, need it or not.
Most weeks, I have enough cash left over to get lunch!
I've only run the 4R tank down once, just for reference.
The MILES REMAINING gauge was down to 1 mile before I re-filled the tank.

I ran my Miles to Empty down to 1 yesterday and it took 20.5 gals to fill it.

Keep in mind that modern vehicles don't have a bobber so whether you're on a hill or not won't change the needle position.

I just looked up the fuel pump for my 06, it does indeed still use a float.

I think I misspoke. It appears nowadays needles aren't quite as sensitive to the movement of the floats. Sorry for my bad info

It may be that as well. I do not know if running the fuel low REALLY kills fuel pumps in 5th Gen 4Runners.

There was a bit of a tirade about this going on over at tacomaworld.com awhile back.

I ran my vehicle down to where it had 20 miles left on the range indicator (so that should be a gallon or so until "empty"). I obviously know that it is going to be more than a gallon left because of the reserve but when I filled up, I ONLY GOT 19.5 GALLONS TO FULL.

I cannot believe that there are around 2.5-3.5 reserve gallons in that tank!

most i ever filled up was 20.9 gallons and that was only because i missed the last gas station. since i've had my 4runner for a while now, i typically fill up by mileage as i reset trip odo every fillup (400 miles via highway).

I filled up my 2015 4Runner TRD today with 11 miles to go on the digital read out and it took 19.6 gallons to fill up. So roughly about 3.4 gallons left in the 23 gallon capacity tank . I reckon that would give me about 60 or so miles to find a gas station.

Of course every vehicle is different. My old 2002 Sequoia's fuel light comes on with 6 gallons remaining in the tank.

I have owned 2000 4 runner for 17 years, have never got over 13.5 gals in fuel tank . Never even close to 18.5 .

My 2016 Gen 5 will take 2.5 gallons more fuel after the auto fill fuel pump stops.

Manual says 23 gallons. I once put in 24.95 gallons.

Full in the tank and "full" in the filler neck are 2 different things, the filler neck is quite long and can easily hold another couple gallons.

That being said if you fill it up into the filler neck every time or quite often you risk messing up the charcoal canister which can be quite costly to replace, the canister is design to deal with gas fumes, liquid fuel will damage it to the point it will need replacing, with the fuel level way up into the filler neck the gas can easily get into the hose going to the canister.

While I agree that sometimes the gas has bubbles that stops the pump quickly, sometimes the pump is very sensitive to the bubbles too. I have a difficult time seeing the filler neck holding another two gallons of fuel. I would suspect that possibly the calibration of the fuel pump may be off. Common 3rd Gen problem. Fixed on the 2001 and up. My 99 had the same issue. The light comes on with about 5 gals of fuel left instead of 2 like it should. Just know that there is about 5 gals of fuel left when your light comes on. At 17 mpg, I figured I could go another 60 to 90 miles once the light came on. Never ran out of gas.

There is no simple or easy fix. Involves replacing the sending unit and an updated circuit board in instrument cluster.

Eh, just do what my wife does. When the light comes on reset trip A. when 50 miles comes up, get gas....

works every time... I usually get a call... the car wont go anymore. I think im out of gas....

It consistently takes 2.5 gallons more at pumps all over the place.

Today I took my 2021 Pro down to 35 miles left on the range calculator. At that point my empty light went on, right as I was coming up on a gas station. I had a stretch of snowy foothills to get through before the next gas station, so I decided not to chance it further.

Pumped 18.5 gallons up to the auto shutoff.
