How do I know what gears I have in my axels other then opening the diffs and checking? I didn't purchase it off a dealership so I am unaware of the current gears. I've read that the 2000 4wd limited came with 4.10, 4.30 and in some cases even 4.56 (im not 100% sure of this but its just what ive read)
I'm looking into either a factory Elocker or an Arb air locker. But I have no clue what gears I have. I also know that many people on the T4r's amazing website have done the same thing im looking into and total prices of cost once completed would be nice.

Any opinions and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What gear ratio do I have?
Jack up one tire if you have an open diff, or both tires if you have a working posi or locking differential. Rotate the tire one full revolution for posis and lockers and 2 full revolutions for open diffs. Carefully count the number of full revolutions the driveshaft makes. This is your gear ratio. In other words, if the drive shaft turns 3 ¾ turns, you probably have a 3.73 gear ratio. Turning the tire for twice the number of full revolutions and dividing the drive shaft revolutions by two will give you a more accurate reading.

I looked into this recently, and there's really not a good way that I've found. There seems to be a ton of discrepancy about what gears came with what. I think the best bet, besides opening it up and checking, is to do the spin test: How to Determine Gear Ratio by Spinning One Wheel | eHow

There's plenty of other links with how to do the spin test too. At least that way you know for sure.

ok I forgot to mention that I don't have the tools to do a spin test.

If you have the factory e locker, you will have 4.30's. If not, you will have 4.10's. The 4.56's were never offered in the 4runners other than in a select few 4cyl 5speed elocked models.

I just did a ton of research on this as I had to replace my front diff and wanted to make sure to get the correct gears for my truck.

You can also look at your door tag in the drivers side door jam. If under the a/tm section it is A03A, you have 4.10's. A04A is 4.30's

What if my door jamb says ao2a? Do you know what gears I might have? It's a 97 v6 sr5 4x4.

According to the site below, that is a 3.58 which I have never heard before however this site has been rumored to not be 100% correct (it says a04a is a 4.56 when I know for a fact its a 4.30) Is yours a 5 speed or auto? Were the factory tires 15 or 16"?

Counting the teeth is the only way to be 100% sure. You can do this by pulling the drain plug (preferably during a fluid change) use a flashlight to look in the hole and use a magic marker on 1 tooth, then have someone spin a wheel while counting the teeth until you get back to your mark. 41 teeth = 4.10, 43 teeth = 4.30 etc etc

Hmm. Well that would make sense for my lack of acceleration with 33s. Would you think a switch to 4.88s is a good choice for 33s?

4.56 or 4.88 should be fine for your 33's.

Alright so i called my buddy over and he helped me do a spin test(my jack is in use on my boat while I'm working on it) and it seems as if i have the 4.10 gears. What are some good e lockers(is the factory e locker the best) and what are some good air lockers?
