Gen4 Passenger Power Window Switch Mod?

Hello everyone as this is my first post.

I'm new to Toyota, but I'm a pretty handy DIY'er. I was wondering if anyone here has attempted to replace the pass. window switch with an auto switch like on the driver's side window?? (On a Gen4)

It seems like a pretty easy swap, or am I dreaming? Does the switch go thru a control module that dictates duration of power? I don't think so, but I'm not sure.

Any seasoned info out there? Thanks.

This has been discussed before. Last I recall, someone was going to try the switch from the Lexus. Also, supposedly the JDM version of the 4R (Hilux) has auto up/down on all windows.

IIRC, the last time I studied the wiring manual, it's going to take more than just a new switch. I believe the window controller is embedded into the motor assembly and the passenger door has a motor assembly without the controller -- i.e. it's going to be an expensive upgrade if it's even possible at all.

Try the SEARCH button to dig up the old thread.

Has nobody attempted to "switch" their switches around to see if the AUTO switch will work with the passenger window??

I don't mind doing it, I'd just like to know in case someone has already tried it and knows the outcome. It would save me some time.

Yah, that's not the thread I was referring to. I dunno where it went--I know it's there somewhere.

EDIT: I just check every thread I ever posted in and didn't see it. Perhaps it was deleted???

In any case, search around for the wiring manual. It's posted here somewhere as well. You can then take a look at the wiring diagram and see what you will encounter before you rip your doors apart. IIRC, it's more than just the switch.

I also recall there was more than just the switch. I remember the thread you are talking about rando...

As I remember it, there was definitely different window motors for the driver's door versus the passenger door/rear doors. from the wiring diagram, it shows an extra wire going to the drivers door that the other three window motors don't have...
 
The auto up/down feature uses a number of sensors for safety and to know when to turn off the motor. It is most likely those controls are built into the motor assembly, as already suggested. This is likely since the jam sensor probably detects when the motor draws too much current.

The control is probably in the motor or located god knows where. Its more than just a "switch."
 
I have a new question about adding an auto passenger window. Would you need to buy two auto switches, one for the driver console and one for the passenger switch alone? I know you would need a different motor in addition.

guess it'd depend on if you want your passenger to have auto up/down. personally, I'd say it'd be enough for the driver to have the auto up/down on both and not the passenger...the passenger has all the time in the world to concentrate on putting the window up or down...the driver needs to drive also. :D

Mine are all auto up/down, including rear windows, as are all the JDM models. I think I have posted pics before so if you search for posts by me you should find the pics.

And I believe that's the solution right there. Order the JDM passenger side switch, window motor (and possibly a different harness) and you're all set. It shouldn't cost you more than $1k. :D

WTF! I just re-read that thread a couple days ago and now I can't find it! You posted about why you didn't think it would work. This is bugging me that I can't find it when I just read it!

But why? If that's the case, maybe one of the moderators can recover your posts. It was good information you provided.

So, if a person starts a thread, he can delete an entire thread? That is pretty weak. Say someone didn't really contribute much or decided to not be a member anymore or was banned and he deleted all his old threads. Tons of valuable posts could be lost. I know I make it sound dramatic, but people spend a lot of time contributing to this great forum.

Sounds like a lost cause (at least for me)........unless you have pretty much unlimited funds......and in that case you could probably have sprung for the GX which I believe has all auto.

Just to throw another thought out there, another feature that you would have if you put in all auto windows is the ability to open and close the windows from the remote. There would probably be some programming in the process though. I know on Lexus and BMW (all windows are auto) that if you hold down the unlock button for 5 seconds, all the windows roll down. If you put the key in the door and turn it to lock and hold for 5 seconds, the windows roll up. IMO, I think I would rather only be able to open the windows from the inside than spend all that $$$ on motors and switches. I would rather use that money for mods that would make my truck look and drive better. :p
