Get a 2006 or wait for the 2007 model?

I test-driven a 2006 2WD V6 SPORT yesterday and really like it. However, the color and configuration that I wanted is still on-order and will not be coming in until late July. So the question is... should I place my order for that 2006 model or should I wait for the 2007 model?

When do you think 2007 4Runners will be coming out?

What do you think will be the changes?

What features do you think that are currently optional but will be standard on the 2007 model?

The dealer told me when I bought mine (month ago) that 2007's wouldn't be out till October or later.

If you can get a better deal on 2006, then get 2006. Otherwise, i would wait for 2007 (if you can).

If you like the '06, I say get it! Spend the time between now and July reading through this forum and you'll find yourself even more excited about finally getting your new 'Runner then.

I originally told myself I was going to wait for the '07 but couldn't hold off any longer after seeing all the fun everyone was having with theirs.

No sense putting yourself through any self-punishment!

I think the 2006 was a "major" update year for the 4th generation wasn't it? New bumpers, lower-body cladding, projector headlights, LED tail lights, new steps and roof rack for the Sport models, etc. Can't imagine that 2007 would bring anything other than minor tweaks. I just got my '06 not long ago and I can tell you that the dealers are more aggressive right now than I've seen Toyota in a long time. Now might be the time to pull the trigger......

You have to ask yourself... what do I want out of this?

a 2007 may have a better resale value in the first 7-9 years of ownership (if you plan to resell the vehicle later), but you have to wait.
a 2006 will likely have better rebates (which may offset the resale difference) and you can get it very soon (and what I found with my '04 was that the dealers really want to get rid of these so they can get the new ones on the lot).

I would doubt that there will be any major changes in 2007. 2004-2005 eliminated the 4 spd tranny from the V6's and introduced new colors... everything else was pure fluff. 2005-2006 showed LED tails, projector headlights, new exterior, but no mechanical changes.

Anyway, Toyota Hawaii do not have that much 4Runners in inventory because it is really a popular SUV here in the islands. Most of the time, you'll have to wait for the next shipment to get one that is if the configuration and color that you want will be in it otherwise you'll have to wait longer.

And Toyota dealerships here are owned by just one company so they have the same inventory, same prices, same deals. So it is really hard to haggle for some discounts. A friend of mine bought a RAV4 last year when the 2006 just came out and the difference between the 2006 and 2007 model is just $400 so he opted for the newer model. I can see that happening with the 4Runners, too.

I am just hoping that with the 2007 model 4Runner that it will come with standard side impact airbag (as it is now standard on the 2007 Camry), a bluetooth-capable audio system, an iPod support with the audio system would be nice also.

Toyota Hawaii only offers options as packages (4 to pick from) and I really like to get the side impact airbags but it means I have to pay for the other options that comes with it. So if it is going to be a standard feature for the 2007, then that will be great for me.

I agree with you FlipIam. I hate the Toyota dealers in Hawaii. All owned by the same company (servco). That's one of the reasons why we don't see any rebate offers. If you can wait, just get the 07 and this will give you enough time to monitor our ridiculous gas prices.

Just a clarification -- all Toyota dealers in Hawaii purchase their vehicles from Servco, the distributor who also owns dealerships on Oahu and Kauai. However, Big Island Toyota and Maui Toyota are not owned by Servco.

As I mentioned in one of the other threads, I purchased my 4Runner from Big Island Toyota. I worked with my sales rep over the phone and via e-mail, and my vehicle was delivered in Honolulu. The only difference is that my vehicle has a license plate that starts with "H--" instead of "N--" or now "P--."

This saved a few hundred dollars from the best price I could get at the Servco-owned dealerships on Oahu. If you see a newer model Toyota with an "H--" license plate, it probably was purchased from Big Island Toyota.

It's not as good as getting the $1K rebates and under-invoice pricing on the mainland, but saving several hundred dollars is better than nothing.

How much is it to have one shipped from CA?

I think it's about $1K, but not sure. The price has gone up due to the increase in the fuel surcharges that the shippers are charging. Also, my understanding is that a recent Hawaii tax law change now requires you to pay Hawaii's excise tax (4%) on new vehicles brought in to the state (or something like that).

I recently saw a fleet publication dated April 2006 that mentioned that most of Toyota's 2007 lineup will be carryovers (no major changes) with the exception of the already introduced Camry, Yaris, and FJ Cruiser. So, I agree that we shouldn't expect to see any substantial changes for the 2007 4Runner.

Interestingly, the publication listed the 2007 Highlander as a carryover with the only change that curtain and side airbags are now standard. I'm guessing a new Highlander will be introduced in the spring of 2007 as a 2008, the same way the 2007 Camry was introduced this spring.

Of course, I would consider all this unofficial until we see the Toyota press release this fall.

The Servco conspiracy is also that if you've given your name to any Servco dealer regarding a quote, that quote wont be undercut by another dealership. Im not sure if this is true all the time but I know several people who have tried to go from one dealer on Oahu to another and they were flat out told the first price quote they got would be the only quote they got!!

Gotta love Servco....if it wasnt for Toyotas they sell, they never woulda got my business!

Its which salesperson you go to first that makes ALL the difference in Hawaii

I went to Waipahu one first and got a quote, then I tried the internet sales from Mapunapuna and the qoute is the same, then I tried Windward and I got a qoute with $500 less than the others. So, I ordered it from there and it came couple weeks ago. I also got the $300 gas card even though I ordered the 4Runner before the promotion.
