I thought to tacoma and tundra frames were sourced from the US and that was why they were separated from 4runners in the suit. Is this no true?

I believe it is true. I also thought I read somewhere that the rusting issue was bad on the tundras outside of the rustbelt too.

Just so you all know, if you cut out and patch your frame, Toyota will likely use that against you IF a frame replacement case arises like with the Tacoma. They may say you modified it and you do not qualify for a new frame. Just food for thought.

These guys think it will be cost effective to get a new frame. Dudes, your truck is getting junked. You might get like what? 25% above value? A rusty 2004 V6 4Runner is appraised in the condition category of "shit", and that is around $4000(at least what I see them going for). You aren't getting jack.

I don't think the value of a 4R and Tacoma are much different for the same given year. If the Tacoma got a new frame, it's possible the 4Runner will also. If this goes through, start buying up all the cheap 4Runners due to frame rot and bring their value back!

Is this by personal experience or by guessing? I’m honestly curious. I’ve heard of a Tacoma frame warranty denial due to weld-on sliders but haven’t heard of a “repair” job causing the same. Seems like a different case, given if you took a badly perfed frame to Toyota they’d deem it undriveable, so I don’t see how having a body shop or some licensed repair shop fix it be a frame replacement killer. Seems to me that if Toyota somehow does end up getting boxed into a frame recall that any repairs done for rust issues would then be up for potential reimbursement. Same deal for other items that end up with a recall or tsb. If you keep your receipts they may reimburse. Example being smog pumps on Tacoma’s, etc, that are just as if a few months back being covered like how they are for Tundras and whatnot. Lots of guys initially paid the $1000+ to get them replaced and around $3-500 for diy and many were reimbursed.

I know Toyota dealers can try and attempt a denial to save $$$ i just don’t see how actually fixing an issue that was deemed an issue would then lead to denial of replacement for said issue. Like when people say dealers have denied warranty work for adding aftermarket suspension and linking it to some obtuse failure, mostly just anecdotal and unbacked heresay.

I will be keeping an eye on how this all plays out. I’m going to get my patch welded up with one of those prefabbed frame sections and then get my use out of my newly bought 4th gen and enjoy my otherwise solid vehicle either way lol.

It's a guess but think of it this way. But a TV, TV fails, you fix it yourself but it fails again. Bring it to wherever you bought it from and try and have them warranty it. Not going to happen because you've modified it yourself regardless of the reason for modification. Once you've touched it or cut into it, your chances of having them cover it decline to almost zero and rightfully so. When the frame of your truck is at risk, why take chances?

I can see that being an issue if the piece you have added in then leads to a failure. But I’d be surprised if they were to clear themselves of a replacement if there were areas outside of the repaired spot that were rusting or perfed. Like if I have a new section of rear LCA mount area welded in but they consequently find a hole up near the cats then I’d expect them to honor their replacement program.

i live in the rust belt and spend a lot of time at the beach as a surfer.
they cover our roads all winter in the NE and we travel snowy conditions
all winter snowboarding etc. I bought my 4r 2 months ago and looked at a bunch of them before buying, to avoid one with a lot of rust before it got to me.
found one that was pretty clean and checked off all the boxes and bought it.
i wire brushed and rustoleum undercarriage painted the few areas i was concerned with - and once that dried i painted new 5w30 on my frame and other areas. then once i oiled the underside - I drove on some dusty roads so a layer of silt adhered to the oil. old trick used in the rustbelt. with some maintenance i plan on running my 4r for a long time despite the salty area i live.

i want to be able to drive my dogs and family safely in the winter in the 4wd truck that i bought.

Ok, then go buy a new truck. You’ll have a valid warranty to cover you if the frame rots, and you can take preventative measures against it as well. A rotted frame on a neglected ~10-15 year old vehicle is quite realistic. considering these are boxed frame that hold moisture by nature, I don’t see how you can coat it anymore properly without a liquid undercoat. And this is not commonly done from the factory.

So the TR4 frames were not sourced from USA, right? So that is why they are not covered? Makes sense. Maybe TR4 frames are not defective and rusting is due to poor maintenance on part of owners and/or living in the rust belt.

i have one of the VIN #s indicating my truck was made in Japan (JT beginning vin # i believe) I wonder how manufacturing/assembly origin effects this, or just rust belt and maintenance are the main causes.

I would think there would be less carelessness in Japanese manufacturing. Those people take pride in their work. Mine is JT vin also.

I try to buy Japanese and German products.

I have a Chevy Suburban, bought new. Build quality leaves a lot to be desired along with materials used. Things just keep falling off. Only used for highway driving. Also a GMC Acadia. Kicking myself in the ass for buying American. All my other cars are Japanese and German, all excellent.

Not trying to start the American worker/manufacturing vs Foreign worker/manufacturing debate here but I don't think that we Americans take pride in doing anything now. Always waiting for Friday to come around.......
