Getting pieces together for the 1UZ

Hey all, I'm starting the hunt for the 1UZ, I've searched high and low and have had some luck as far as ECUs go and engine mounts too, I'm having trouble finding the adaptor plate for it. If anyone knows of any companies that do it, please let me know. I'm expecting to start this build around next month. Thanks.

You would be better off purchasing a LS400 and pulling the motor and everything you need. We did that with the 1985 Pickup we built. Bought the LS for $600. Pulled the engine, trans, wiring, ECU, and the gas tank. Scrapped the rest of the car and got $300 back.

Okay what transmission did you use, and did you have to put the body lift on? Also how did you hook up the 4WD?

The build we did was a 2wd pickup so no 4WD to hook up. We used the LS transmission and built a crossmember for it.

No body lift or anything but we did build custom motor mounts for it and had to build some headers that run closer to the block. The stock headers were going to hit the UCA mount otherwise.

Check out UZswap.com - Index. Pretty sure there have been a few people on there that have put the 1UZ in 3rd gens and Taco's

Okay I see, from what I've read it would be easier to just use the LS trams and figure out a way to wire/fab/mount in the transfer case I have. I'm going to start doing the swap regardless. Gotta do it yourself to figure out what to do right?

Ok advice for 1uz swap.

Get a whole running car. Also try to find one without trac control.

You can modify the 4runner guage cluster to work. It's just wiring.
I used the t-100 tail housing and cut about 1" off the tail shaft of the sc400 transmission. The gear ratio is close to the 4runners in the trans.

It was hard to source the t-100 tail housing since Most shops want to sell the whole transmission. So hunt craigslist for a v6 t-100 transmission. Strip the tail housing then drill and tap one hole and you can swap the pans over to the sc400 tranny to get more capacity. I also stripped all the extra body wiring off the donor so I can color match each wire incase I needed to make changes.

Go to a pick and pull and find the extra pig tails and make jumpers that way you can unplug instead of splicing. I sourced the 1uz males for the ecu and took apart a 3gen ecu at pick and pull for cheap and repinned what i need to make a jumper for the ecu and cluster. I also pulled a extra realy box to control the fans for the radiator so it was a cleaner more factory look.

Granted I am using a SC400 1uz into a 1988 4runner, but the swap shouldn't be much different. I also had the added issue of passing California smog so I had to be extra clean with wiring.

Do it rite and take your time, I have about close to a year labor now because of time and wanting to be extra clean about everything.

Ohh do all the major service before you drop it in too, trust me once you get the mounts built and the angle rite you don't want to move the motor again.

Funny story, I paid $600 for my first LS400 that needed some work. It's all fixed up and my mom drives it now... kbb is like 4k on it.. seriously love that car.

The guy I bought it from was asking 3k and I kept in touch with him during a few weeks while I was trying to get the money together. I had told him it was a no go a week after trying to sell my other car at the time... then out of the blue he calls and says he was gonna scrap it and the junk yard would give him $500. I told him I had $600 and I picked it up that day.

It's tempting to replace my mom's ride and use the LS as a donor for my truck, but they both run so good.. if you do use the 1uz, eliminate the damn egr tubes on the back of the block, they're a pain

Nice. They are pretty sweet cars and this one was pretty nice too. It got rear ended which was why it was cheap. I wouldn't say it was totaled but i guess the insurance company thought it was.

If you are going to go through all this trouble then why not just supercharge it?

They make superchargers for the 1uz also, imagine having that.
There's a video of a LS400 on 3psi boost. No intercooler.
Dyno result is 245rwhp, 245lb-ft torque
