GOBI - real World Noise and MPG

5,000 miles on new 2016 TRDPRO. Left with 402 miles only factory rack
MPG. 19.2

Cruising at 70 - 75 and around 1,200 miles. MPG dropped to 18.6

Added GBI Stealth and 40 inch Ridgid Bar. Noticed slight increase in wind noise.
Not an issue. Mileage is now 17.2 at cruise speed 75 MPH.

Really dude, not even decibel, frequency or even a video from inside the cab? What is this "real world" crap you speak of.

I would try to calculate your MPG the old school way rather than trust the computer. I was getting 17.8 per gallon for a while and then I unplugged my battery for about an hour to install HID headlights. Now I get 18.5 mpg.

I can't see how new bulbs increased my mpg.

you may want to mess with your ferring. I've seen posts where the proper adjustments leave little to no noise, which may correlate with wind resistance.

I should have mine in this week, then again Gobi said it would ship 2 weeks ago, so who the hell knows. Ordered 7/6/16 and over 12 weeks now... 6-8 my ass.
 
I was getting ~ 16.5 MPG stock.

Currently, with lift, heavier E rated tires, Gobi rack, armor, etc., I'm getting ~13 mpg.

For reference, the mileage is about 50% around town and 50% long highway trips @ 75-80 MPH.

I hardly notice any wind noise from the roof rack. FWIW, It was slightly noisier before I installed the light bar.

And why exactly would I make such a thing up? Not sure I'm getting the logic. Anyway, while your rudeness deserves nothing other than to be ignored, I'll take the high road and explain it for you anyway:

I drive about 80 miles per day, of which about 50 is back roads with little traffic and an average speed of 40 or so. The other 30 split between city and highway. I drive gently and I anticipate stops. If I want to hot rod, I take my Camaro. The 4runner gets driven like I'm on the way to church. I expect my mileage to dip come winter, and of course when I get the chance to explore some trails on road trips and such, it will dip further. But for the previous 2000 miles of gentle driving, which is since I bought the vehicle a month or so ago, my mileage has averaged 21.9. It's been a pleasant surprise, as driven under similar conditions my little Subaru Forester only managed about 25.

Wow dude! You gonna be alright? Wasn't an attack. Maybe I'm just jealous or I got a bum 4Runner. Never saw 20+ mpg. But then again, I don't drive it to church. I would also bet most people don't get 20+ either. It just reminds me of when I tried explaining how hot my girlfriend was who lived 3000 miles away to my friends who never saw her when I was 16. Lighten up buddy. I would buy you a beer any day. Life's too short to take things personally.
 
Best I have seen yet is 18.4 on a 180 mile drive round trip on mostly non flat terrain. In the city I average 15 (stock for the time being). I cannot drive it like there is an egg on the hood as with the hills here I'd be shot for holding up traffic. :uzi:

I'm only at 1300 miles though.. but I don't see myself ever hitting 20

Additionally, 20mpg is even in the bell curve for a 4.0L V6 SR5 with others getting 21+ (And more get 21 than 16)

Ha! If I walked into a church it might catch fire. Unlike a typical NY'er, I would buy you a beer too. Then you could go ask forgiveness for the both of us. I'm not mad at you white knight. Keep on defending on. Do I hear 25 MPG??? Look around sensitive "men", there are a lot bigger things you should all be having some butt hurt over. :hug::hug::hug:

Easy killer. Any disputing the 20+ notion may cause you to feel the thunderous fury and ridicule of the angry eco-Runners. Maybe we both got bum 4Runners. :shrug:

Cool man. I'm really not trolling here to start trouble. Really wasn't attacking the dude either. Like I said, BS, just because I never saw it that's all. Sometimes context gets lost in text. I've even asked questions before to see how guys are doing it. Tire pressure etc. let's all get along, get great gas mileage and see what it takes to get our trucks stuck. Have a good one bro.
 
I was getting between 16 and 18 mpg on my recent trip to Alaska. 18 was a rarity though, only saw that during relatively flat legs of the trip. I typically kept cruise control off to keep things as smooth as possible during the many elevation changes along the way. You guys are making me feel a little better about my numbers!

The cruise control definitely didn't like the increased drag from my roof top boxes. It seemed to constantly undershoot and then have to downshift like crazy to get back up to speed.

Here's a photo of all the crap I had up top, for reference. My homemade wind deflector on the front really helped with the noise, but I didn't do anything for the back faces where the suction creates a lot of the additional drag.

14.7 mpg around town. Would love to see more but with lift, bigger tires and plate bumper, I knew what I was getting into.
