Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

First off thank you 1engineer... Awesome thread. It really helped in my research.

Ok, newb question....

I've decided on a setup for my 2015 SR5, Ultra Gauntlet 18"s and General Grabber AT2s (275/65R18)

I'm in the green for every dimension accept for tire diameter 10.9 vs p1's chart of 10.83. Not too far off the mark, but deferring to guys w/ way more experience, would it be worth buying spacers right off the bat, or rolling the dice to see if there are any issues?

I wasn't able to find any one with this exact setup but it I'd love to see pics if any one has them. Also, this worries me, perhaps there is something I'm not considering with my chosen setup.

Try it without the spacers first. You will likely have a very minor rub in reverse approaching full steering input. This way you'll at least know whether they might work before you drop the coin on a set. If you have minor rub without, you will have major rub with.

GREAT write up! I wish I would ha e found something like this before I got my countersteer as they have a -10 offset - look great, just my KM2s rub the BM every time in reverse, and many times in OR situations.

Thanks!

The KM2s tend to rub more than similar size tires of other brands... Should be able to resolve the BM rub (without a chop) via an alignment if you have aftermarket UCAs.... (assuming a 285/70/17)

Should probably work without spacers (assuming ~ 4.5 backspacing). Spacers would be a bad idea.

Those wheels generally come 18x9"... You would have more clearance for running bigger tires if you went with a rim that came in an 8" width. Things are so much easier when you start with the right size rim... but I understand people want a specific look...

Looking for softer tires and other mods

Hey everyone I'm an 1st time T4R owner 2015 limited, and I am anxious to mod it. First off I traded a BMW 335i so I miss the speed and ride. That said, what tires would you recommend for a softer ride (in the non-winter) and better cornering. I used to run Michelin pilot sports and I loved them. I've read the tire fitment options and I thinking a 275 with a 45 or 50 profile might help. I realize I'll never get BMW handling but I'd like softer ride and less body roll. 2nd, what performance mods are good for more HP? Intake? Exhaust? I haven't been able to find a supercharger or turbo for this engine, so any ideas there I would appreciate.

Supercharged and turbos don't exist for this engine. No modifications will increase the performance or fuel milage in any meaningful way without forced induction.

Softer ride and less body roll is impossible on this vehicle. Harsher ride and less body roll is possible.

marshal I waved as I zoomed through your town on Sunday, no time to stop, you probably missed me from the interstate though. :plane:

Christofury OK, maybe this is not your problem, but when I took delivery of the Red Hare the ride was terrible. Turns out the tires were inflated to 40 psi. Toyota does that when shipping just so the TPMS don't activate. A bit of deflation to 32 psi solved my problem.

Thanks that did help a lot. I'm still interested in getting sportier tires next time though.

Has anyone run 275/70/17 KO2s (or other AT tire) on an 8" wheel with 4.5" backspace? Those are the stats on the FN F(x) Pro wheels that I'm interested in snagging for my soon-to-be 4Runner, and I was hoping to see if they rubbed or not.

I ask because they've got the same backspace as SR5 wheels and people seem to be running 275 KO2s with no rubbing on those, but putting the tire out another inch worries me. Or is that not how it works? Anyone know if they do or should/shouldn't rub?

Much appreciated for any help you can provide.

SCS Wheel fitment question, with BFG K02 275/70/17 and NO LIFT

^^ Similar question to the one above. I've tried posting this in a few threads now but no responses...

So I'm trying to narrow down what wheels I want to mount on my 2015 SR5 and I have some concerns with fitment on a 8.5" wide wheel.

I'm ALMOST set on SCS Stealth 6 wheels (17x8.5 4.3BS and -12 offset). I'll be mounting BFG K02 275/70/17 tires with NO lift (I'll eventually do a 2.5" lift).

Is anyone running the stealth 6 wheels with 275/70/17s and stock suspension?? If so, how bad is the rubbing? Can it be resolved by pushing back the fender liner and removing mudflaps? Or will i still need to lift it too?

Sorry for the questions, but i really love these wheels and hope that they will work without issues.

Thanks!

You're coming from a BMW to a 4Runner and you say the ride in the 4R is too harsh? Interesting...

Better cornering: Normally I'd say upgrade the anti-sway bars, but I'm not aware of any aftermarket bars for the 5th Gen. Addco expressed interest, but I don't believe they ever made any. Send them an email; if enough people ask for them they'll start making them.

Softer ride: I don't see tires making much difference on a softer ride with 20" wheels. Yes, taller tires will help some, but you're limited by the wheels. If you really want a softer ride, ditch the 20's and go with standard 17's. The problem here is that running taller sidewalls to soften the ride will hurt your cornering.

Alternatively, you could try upgrading shocks... which may also help with the cornering. Unless you have XREAS; you can't upgrade XREAS shocks.

Performance: Other than a major engine update, the Toyota engineers have already done the "easy" fixes to get the most HP out of this engine. You already have a cold-air intake and a mostly free-flowing exhaust. A more open exhaust may help some, but I think it'll mostly be a sound thing. A "chip" is a waste of money.

Stock TE rims, 285/70s, and 1.25" spacers... anyone have experience running this? Trimming is no big deal but want to know what your experiences were.

I have a 2012 SR5 that I am getting ready to raise 2.5" in the front and 1.5" in the rear. For wheels I bought a set of Level 8 MK6's, 17"x8" with 0 offset.

My question is, will I have any rubbing issues if I go with 285/70 Nitto Terra Grapler G2's?

Can someone confirm stock Trail Rims (7 spoke) with 3" lift front and rear if you would be able to mount up a 285/70/17 tire with no wheel spacers?
I am wondering if there will be contact to the upper control arm.

Thanks

rubbing and or need for BCM are need because of increased diameter and width of the tire as tire is turned ( arc circle) ( neglecting other factors for now such as off set and suspension compression spacers).

I am torn between a 275/55-20 (32 OD)
and
265/60/20 (32.5 OD)

2014 Limited (Retaining X-...)
Day star lift (soon)
and trying to determine tires for a 95% road/5% light trail build

It is known( from this forum) that a 275/55-20 will fit with out a lift.

I would really like this threads input if a 32.5 od tire but with a 265 profile would fit on a 14 LT with X system on a daystare lift....

You'll likely have to move the fender liner forward. I have essentially the same tire width and diameter (except on an 18 inch wheel) and I had to push the fender liner forward to avoid rubbing. I also have a top spacer lift like you plan to get (not daystar brand).

EDIT: However, my wheels are 9 inches wide, rather than the stock width of 7 inches. That probably increases the scrub radius. So you might be ok without modifications.

moving the fender liner forward is easy just did not want to do the BCM for a "pavement queen"

Mmikey see your setup in your sig. can you pm me who you got your lift from? I have not found a lift/space kit that works with the X-REAS system that is 3" total lift on the front.

From my past experience building race cars. for every inch of rim width +/- there is a change of approx 0.2" +/- in section width of the tire.
Granted in most normal mounting situations that maximum section width is at about 2/3 of the distance between the beed and the roll over points indicated on the tire ( little triangle on the side wall)

but int he case of squeezing a 265/275 on a 7 inch wide wheel that maximum section width would be closer if not at the Roll over point.

Just giving a heads up that I do get a slight rub in the inside of the fender well while reversing with 265/70/17 Goodyear Duratracs on the TRD Pro wheels. This is on an otherwise stock Limited.

I am confident that it is not an alignment issue as it was aligned at 2 different places, both of which used the Hunter.

Not a big deal, just wanted others with a LE to know that you may have this issue.

Without pushing the front fender liner forward, 275/60/20 BFG KO2 were rubbing in reverse and at full turn. After I pushed the fender forward, I have no rubbing issues what so ever, and Glad I went with the size tire because they still look kind of small to me.

Also have the Toytec 3" lift spacer kit installed and 1 inch wheel spacers.

Hope it helps you decide. Since you have to push the fender in for the 260/60/20 might as well go for 275 ;)

I went to Mojave to camp and shoot, no rubbing either during flex
