Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

Just picked up some TRD Pro wheels for my 2015 Limited. Can't wait to mount them but now the decision between BFG KO2s in 265/70/17 or 275/70/17. So much debate here on the forums only leaves me hours of searching but more confused. :hurt:

Only +5 lbs more than the stock 20's going with 275s but -5lbs with the 265s. Curious what gas mileage will do as I already get 17.9 mpg average. Ohhh decisions decisions. Someone just decide for me please! :Cry:

I don't think that 5 lbs will affect mpg if at all. The type of tire and load rating will affect mpg more

I have 275 KO2's and mpg impact varies by psi. At 36 (running without a load), I'm averaging about 2.0 less over stock. At 44 psi with a load and 4 passengers, around 1 mpg.

I've gone through the entire thread and one thing that I have not seen adressed is if these rough guidelines take into account full flex? I have seen a lot of talk about rubbing on flat ground while turning the wheels but nothing about turning/going straight at full flex/bottoming out.

Anyone have any experiences with rubbing with 275/70/17's (KO2's and Duratracs) while flexing hard? Especially interested in experiences with this with TRD Pro's since they are rumored to have an extra 1" of wheel travel.

Yes they take into account full travel to stops and full lock in reverse. The reason the guideline is purposely vague is the range on caster alignment spec and also the stack up tolerances that are different for each 4Runner. What fits for you might not fit for me. Good question though.

Want some advice. I currently have Mk6 wheels with -12 offset, 1.25 wheel spacers and 2 " lift all around. The tires are KO2 265/70/17 (stock size). When I reverse with wheels turned enough, they rub against the back body mount . I have removed the mud flaps already. My front fender is trimmed because of the bumper replacement and right now i don't have any rubbing going forward.

At some point I am thinking of going to 285/70/17 KO2. If I get a LR UCA, will that help get rid of the rubbing against the body mount or do i need to get rid of the spacer and/or get a wheel with 0 or +ve offset? or do i need more lift?

sounds like you need to have your caster increased a ton, shoot for 3-4 degrees the more the better. if youre still running oem UCAs you might need to get an aftermarket one to add more caster, and when you go to 285s youre most likely gonna need to do the bodymount chop

Agreed. Every time I open this thread I'm excited that there will be some actual "bigger" tire talk and not this 275 BS.

We should have a thread talking about tires bigger than 33". 285's and their equivalent have become the standard....IMHO

take a look over at the 4th gen section, we've had a wave of guys, including me, move to 305/70r17 or 315/70r17 ; 35x12.50. since the underlying chassis is 98% the same it would apply to the 5th gen as well

I've installed the Toytec 3" kit (TTHA-CK-RCC), LR UCAs and had the 285/70R 17 Toyo Open Country AT/2 set put on the OEM Trail wheels. Mudflaps *had* to come off and I get a little rub at full lock in reverse on the plastic in front of the tire. I think I can resolve this with minimal trimming.

I realize it is the middle of the day and I should be working. But I have a couple of points that I want to air while I am waiting for the electrician and concrete truck to show.

1. The red on the graph instantly intimidated me about running 285s or even considering 305s. Even though, I ran 305s on 16x9s on the FJ.

2. 4Runner guys are much more hesitant about trimming than FJ guys. Hopefully, that changes soon.

3. I decided to take the plunge. It is rather simple. I can now fit a 285 with Spidertrax or 305s with zero rubbing and the trimming is not even noticeable to people.

4. The entire process takes 15-20 minutes using a sawzall for a BMC and a fine tooth sabre saw for the bumper trimming.

It is not that hard people. Really.

No, it is not hard at all. I only found the rub this morning, I am at work also, and my Dremel is home in the garage.

I forgot to mention I have 1.25" BORA spacers on there as well.

I bought Kumho Road Venture AT51 Size: LT275/70R17

by the fitting table from the first page I'm ok if I stay with original wheels 17x7 15 mm offset

I found BLACK RHINO® - WARLORD Matte Gunmetal (17" x 9", with 12 Offset )

Will I run into rubbing problem? I have not modified suspension, no lifts , no spacers.
