Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

What mods will I need to perform with 285 tires on trail rims if with spidertrax 1.25 spacers?

I already pushed the front fender liner as far as it would go and trimmed a corner of the bumper. I'm okay with modding the rear mud flap as well, but I don't want to start cutting up the body.

Hey Fellas - been lurking here for a bit and finally decided to join of course because I need help.

I read the sticky "Changing Tire Size or Wheels? Read this first!" extremely helpful. I found a drill bit in my tire today and have to get new tires ASAP. I Decided that now was as good time as any to for a wheel/tire/lift.

At the risk of being blasted for asking a question that may have already been answered is the below set up a good one as far as fit is concerned? I ask because the backspacing is 4.75 and the sticky I read said that 4.1-4.5 is ideal.

Here is the set up I am looking at for my '16 SR5

Pro Comp Series 34
Backspacing: 4.75
Wheelsize: 17
Wheelwidth: 8.5

Brand: Nitto
Model: Ridge Grappler
Size: LT285/70R17
Inflated Diameter: 32.76
Inflated Width: 11.5

3" Rough Country lift kit

Any help is appreciated, because I have to get this stuff ordered quickly, or I will end up having to go with a stock-ish setup due to time.

Has anyone had alignment issues from the dealership following a tire & wheel change from stock?

I have a 2013 limited. I was not a fan of the narrow tire like many others. I changed the stock 20x7 wheel to a 18x9 with a +25 offset. I put 265/65 r18 cooper ATP tires on. The 265/65 is the same overall diameter as the stock set up at 31.6”. I did not have the money or desire to lift and it avoided me needing to be worried about having a different size spare on the full time 4 wheel drivetrain.
My main question....
In the last two years I have put 36,000 miles on the tires. I never had any driving issues. I’ve had an alignment done that was recommended and I have followed all rotation and balance maintenance. All done at the dealership. The tread life warrantee is 55,000 miles. I now have all 4 tires that are worn unevenly. All on the outside of the tread. I am at 2/32nds on the outside and 6/32nds on the inside of the tire. Apparently at my dealership they do not do true alignments. They only set to factory specs when they do the alignment.

Can keeping the tire diameter the exact same but going from a 245 to 265 tire and changing the rim width from 7”-9” take the camber that much out of alignment?

I think you are good with all those specs....slight trim on the inner plastic at most.

285/70/17 BFG KO2s on Method NV

Just wanted to share my set up for people to reference I have icon stage 2 at 3” with 285/70/17 KO2s on method NVs and have Zero rubbing at all, I took the front mud flaps off and used the heat gun fender well trick before I installed everything but have no issues and no need for a BMC which is a nice feeling!

FWIW, I just mounted some cooper ST MAXX in 255/75/17 on TRD PRO wheels and am experiencing no rub on an otherwise stock '15 Trail premium w/kdss. I love the look and ride and the tires get decent reviews. Thanks OP for the chart and everyone else who contributes to the thread to give me ideas on what I can run without chopping. Someday I may even post a pic!

I used to run 285/7017 but I went big this weekend and moved to Nitto Ridge Grapplers 305/70/17 w/ SCS F5s 17x9. My setup is:

King Adjustable Coils Front
Total Chaos UCAs
Icon 3" Springs in Rear
King Adjustable Shocks in Rear
Timbren Bump Stops front and back
McQueen Wide Body Fenders front

I did a very aggressive BMC, removed the fender liner and modded all of the pinch welds as well as cut the front part of the bumper. I have no issues with rubbing as of now and will test it on the trails next weekend. I imagine there will be some rubbing.

Fills in the wheel well nicely and I love aggressive offset on the wheels.

Hello,

Can you guys let make me feel better about this.

Going to order 275/70/17 TKO's as well a new rim that has 4.685 backspacing, 5mm offset and 8" wide. I have a 2018 TRDOF .. I don't think I am going to have any issues but would like a little reassurance.

TIA

49 pages later I can absolutely, positively, almost omnipotently, and with complete confidence assure you that you will PROBABLY have no problem. If anything you MAY need to move the front fender liner forward and slightly trim the fender lip in that area. Easily done with a 1/4" drill bit and a box blade knife.

Thanks for replying. I do apologize for the redundancy of the question. I did read and it just stressed me out. On top of tire rack calling and saying it’s going to rub and no returns.

Took a few pics after a wash with the new 255/75/17 st maxx. Now that I wheeled with skinnies, that's all I'll ever purchase going forward. Good size for a stock setup IMO.

Stock 2014 sr5 wheels running 285’s?

Ok so I just bought a 14 sr5p. I’m most likely going to have the suspension swapped out with the eibach pro kit. I would like to throw 285/70’s on the stock wheels for now as I don’t want to drop another grand on rims at this time. Have many people tried this?

Thanks

sWEET RIG MAN LOVE THE STANCE AND MIX OF WHITE/BLACK, VERY CLEAN.

Rubbing at full lock when reversing. Running 265/70/17 Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs. Daystar 2.5/1.5 and spidertrax 1.25” spacers. It appears to be a slight rubbing. I may or may not mod the fender liner. I don’t really plan to go any bigger tire size unless I come into a bunch of money and can afford a full suspension system and bigger tires. I may switch out the leveling kit and put some Bilstein 5100’s on it just to be better overall.

295/70??

I am getting ready to replace my 285/70 r17 BFG AT with Nitto RG.. I was looking at the 295/70 to go a bit wider. Can't find much info on 5th gens with 295/70 - anyone have any info on it? Require much chopping? Thanks

Same issue here: rubs only near full lock in reverse (and moreso when turning left than right). I didn’t expect to find these trucks so variable or assymetric.

My setup: 265/70-17 Pirelli Scorpion ATP on EvoCorse Dakar Zero 17x8 ET0. Stock height 2017 Limited. What looks green on the chart ended up rubbing.

Looks like I have some fender liner modding to do. The tires strike me as running large, but I haven’t measured.

YMMV, and probably will!

That looks great! So you're on stock suspension, and experience ZERO rubbing with 255/75/17's? Do you know the width and offset/backspacing on those wheels?

I'm really wanting to go with 255/75/17 Duratracs on FJC 8-holes for the wife's new '15 Ltd, but it's got the running boards, and no amount of rubbing is going to be acceptable, so I'm really on the fence. Will that size fit in the spare location without airing down as well?

It seems really hard to find info/reviews on this tire size with stock suspension for 5th gens, I've been searching all morning!

Maybe I'm going cross-eyed from reading about 285s too much but some of the guides seem to contradict each other or even themselves.

The biggest one(though there's a few others) is the fitment chart reads the 285s as being in the yellow but THIS guide says

So at the bare minimum you will need to lift the front end of your car between 1.5 and 3.5 inches to accommodate 285’s

I'm new to the 5th gen T4R and I may lift in the future but at minimum it's off the table til next summer(if I only hadn't missed the TRD Pro suspension clearance). Wheels are a coin toss. I really like the look of the TEP/TRDOR wheels in black so I'm either going to coat mine or go with the FN FX Pros with the weight being on the former. The problem is tires are going to be a necessity before year's end and will likely pull that trigger before winter arrives. I'd love to go 285 KO2s on my '16 TEP but am worried about requiring a BMC or UCA rubbing after reading many reports and the contradicting info. I'd really hate to lift later and be stuck with 275s.

Ahhh...to gamble or not.
