Maybe I'm going cross-eyed from reading about 285s too much but some of the guides seem to contradict each other or even themselves.
The biggest one(though there's a few others) is the fitment chart reads the 285s as being in the yellow but THIS guide says
I'm new to the 5th gen T4R and I may lift in the future but at minimum it's off the table til next summer(if I only hadn't missed the TRD Pro suspension clearance). Wheels are a coin toss. I really like the look of the TEP/TRDOR wheels in black so I'm either going to coat mine or go with the FN FX Pros with the weight being on the former. The problem is tires are going to be a necessity before year's end and will likely pull that trigger before winter arrives. I'd love to go 285 KO2s on my '16 TEP but am worried about requiring a BMC or UCA rubbing after reading many reports and the contradicting info. I'd really hate to lift later and be stuck with 275s.
Ahhh...to gamble or not.
Here's my take.
Lift doesn't matter, as the suspension geometry is fixed based upon alignment. A lift might help you not rub during regular drive, but it won't help if you hit a bump... still no good and now your wheel is spinning at 65MPH!!!
Biggest things to make sure 285s fit:
Correct wheels (stick with the Trail wheel offset (+15mm) with no spacers)
Alignment: Maximize Caster (+4 degrees) with Toe and Camber with spec limits (pushes wheel forward away from body mount)
Front fender liner move / trim
Depending upon 'lift', you may have trouble hitting the +4 degrees caster, which is why some must go with new Upper Control Arms (UCAs). Somewhere around 2.5~3" or possibly more, UCAs seem to become needed, but this is just a SWAG as every vehicle is different.
