I got my SCS Sealth 6s in yesterday and my 285 KO2s are waiting on me now. I'm getting my lift done this weekend, any reason not to go ahead and get the SCS/KO2's installed knowing I will have some rubbing until the lift is done? Mine is a TRD Pro, so I already have some cutting from the factory.

Edit. I also know I might need a BMC before it's over.

285/70/17 with spacers

Hey everyone, I'm new to all the suspension stuff but wanted to offer my recent experience as well as ask a couple questions and see if anyone can help.

I went to upgrade my wheels and tires on my 2019 TRD Off Road and stupidly got talked into doing a spacer leveling kit and 285/70/17 Falken AT3's. I shouldn't say stupidly because the truck looks awesome. Not only that but there is ZERO rubbing at all, not at full lockout forward or reverse or otherwise. The guys said that 50% of the time its like that and 50% of the time they have to do some cutting. I'm wondering if it has something to do with it being a 2019 and that its a TRD Off Road.

My problem comes in 2 places, which are my questions. First, the truck is much more sluggish than I expected (again a newbie) and secondly I am worried about off-road performance from putting a cut rate lift solution on. So at this point I am considering picking up new upper control arms and a proper lift so there's no issues off road. It's either that or drop back down to smaller tires and pull the spacer off.

Would be awesome to hear anyones thoughts or experiences with this type of setup. Attaching some pics so you can see how it looks with this setup.

Couple things. You need more lift in the back to fix the negative rake. Otherwise I think it looks great. For mild off road use, which is what 95% of us do, spacers are fine. If you plan to run Moab, spacers are not fine. As for sluggish, that's what happens. Heavy tires take more power to turn, have much more rolling resistance, and there for you feel like the truck is slower because it is. Your gas mileage will also suffer, likely quite a bit. Only way to fix that is to regear which comes at a hefty price tag, likely in the $3000 range.

Thanks tons for the info, super helpful. Might have to size the tires back down a bit at some point then but mostly concerned with the off-road part. So good to hear the spacers are okay for mild off-road as thats all I'll be doing for now. Also, will the negative rake help performance or is that purely aesthetic and is there any reason to upgrade the upper control arm or should I just wait until I get a proper suspension lift all the way around?

Thanks for the help!

Did you put SL or LT 285 at3w tires?

Negative rake may actually hurt performance. Part of the factory positive rake is aerodynamics. Gas mileage is going to suffer no matter what, but IMO I like to try and keep close to factory rake. Even with smaller tires, your fuel economy and performance will suffer. Only way to help that is gears or pure all out street tires. For uppers, stock is fine up until about 2.5" of lift. Once you hit the 3" mark they are really not optional otherwise your alignment will be way out of spec.

Got it, just checked out your rig too, that thing looks amazing. Checked out your specs too and wondering how you like the TRD Pro Suspension? I was going to upgrade to Bilstein but would prefer a somewhat OEM option like that, assuming it will fit on the 2019. Either way definitely going to do what you said and get the rake back in check, the look of it was bothering me but if it hurts performance than gonna fix that right away. Also, on the uppers, my front spacer is 2.25" off road rugged spacer, but when you say a 2.5" lift are we talking the effective lift or the lift at the site? Not sure what a 1.25" lift translates to effectively. Again, thanks for all the help.

The OEM TRD Pro FJ suspension rides great, I love everything about it. Keep in mind mine is modified to provide lift, it was not installed the way it was originally designed otherwise it would sit at stock height. Lift is lift, doesn't matter how you achieve it, it has the same effect on suspension geometry and alignment. For the front, a 1.25" thick spacer provides 2.5" of lift due to the geometry changes in an independent suspension system. For the rear, it's 1:1 meaning a 1" thick spacer provides 1" of lift. How much are you lifted in the back?

Okay got it, thanks again for all the info. So switching to the TRD or Bilstein shocks wouldn't provide lift without the spacers? I don't think they lifted the back at all, it wasn't on the quote or invoice but I am going to have them add it if not to correct the negative rake as you suggested. My main concern all around is just how it handles off road and I don't want to get murdered on gas if possible as I drive back and forth to mammoth pretty frequently (6 hours).

It's a little more complicated than lift or not with the shocks. The shocks can add lift without the spacers, it all depends on how they are installed. They can be adjusted to provide more or less lift. You can use your stock or after market coils. This is for the front only. Rear shocks will not add lift no matter what you do. You need a taller spring or a spacer in the back to gain lift. As for gas mileage, I average about 14.5 around town, may see 16-17 on a road trip.

There is an SL version.

285/70/17 actually comes in 3 styles and they are not created equally.

LT285/70/17 C rated 32.8" X 11.3" and their weight is not advertised on the site I was looking at for whatever reason

LT285/70/17 E rated 33x11.6 weight is 59 pounds each

P285/70/18 which is the SL rated tire 32.8X11.3 weight is 50.5 pounds

I ran the P rated tire, great in every aspect. Probably the best tire I have ever had. Only reason I don't still run them is they are not available in a 295 sadly. I can tell you the P rated tires are sticky as hell. Believe it or not, I got about the same gas mileage with them than I did with my 295/70/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers.

Thanks, I am aware of that. I have been searching tires months. I have a Tacoma friend that has the sl version and loves how sticky they are. I am following the at3w thread and there is much controversy about how the sl is enough for most off roaders. Who knows what my mall crawler will get.

I was very happy with them in P285 just wanted to go back to a 295 If Falken ever makes them in a 295, they will be under my truck again.

If you want a set of 1.5" ret spacers, I have a set from Cornfed. Used 2 months, went taller. Let me know. Should level you out perfectly and are fine with your stock rear shocks.
