Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

Hey everyone, I'm new to all the suspension stuff but wanted to offer my recent experience as well as ask a couple questions and see if anyone can help.

I went to upgrade my wheels and tires on my 2019 TRD Off Road and stupidly got talked into doing a spacer leveling kit and 285/70/17 Falken AT3's. I shouldn't say stupidly because the truck looks awesome. Not only that but there is ZERO rubbing at all, not at full lockout forward or reverse or otherwise. The guys said that 50% of the time its like that and 50% of the time they have to do some cutting. I'm wondering if it has something to do with it being a 2019 and that its a TRD Off Road.

My problem comes in 2 places, which are my questions. First, the truck is much more sluggish than I expected (again a newbie) and secondly I am worried about off-road performance from putting a cut rate lift solution on. So at this point I am considering picking up new upper control arms and a proper lift so there's no issues off road. It's either that or drop back down to smaller tires and pull the spacer off.

Would be awesome to hear anyones thoughts or experiences with this type of setup. Attaching some pics so you can see how it looks with this setup.

I'm thinking of going similar route as you. I have 18 off road with 1" front level only. Was thinking of atw3 285 70 17 on the stock wheels.
Your post makes me think you may have buyers remorse, and you'll probably stop second guessing yourself once you go offroad.
I dont have a ton of experience with 4r but everything I heard is that level kits are fine especially if you dont know which way you want to go.
Good luck!

Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head! I definitely had some buyers remorse but mostly because I wished I had just spent the extra money to do it proper or if nothing else wish I had put the money into the suspension first, then lifted and added larger tires later. BUT, live and learn and I am super happy with how it looks and drives. And yeah everything I've read says light off-roading is fine with spacers and the suspension guy was adamant about that. He could have sold me a suspension upgrade on the spot but said to hold off and put some miles on this and then upgrade in 6 months or so. Anyway, definitely recommend the Falkens, so far they are an awesome tire.

Hey guys, I've been trying to research and figure out this whole thing but I don't want to mess it up. Hoping someone can tailor it out for me. I got a stock sr5 and i found that the biggest tire is 275/70/17 for stock.

I want to pick up 17x8.5 or x8 wheels and go with the biggest tires I can before I have to lift it. I think im going to go with ST MAXX or DURATRACS. I think ill be alright if i go with 275/70/17 but with the factor off offsets and everything i can maybe go bigger to 285? I saw that someone said Fn wheels are little more tailored to Toyotas.

I don't mind doing some trimming, hesitant on body chops since I can't do it myself. Can find someone hopefully to do it though.

If it fits with a lift - it also fits without a lift. The lift does nothing for fitment in the front. So... yes 285's should fit with the correct wheel offset up front without a body mount chop. That said - all 4Runners are slightly different, so it will somewhat depend on the tire you select and vehicle variation. I don't think any 285 tire I'm aware of is larger than my 275/60/20 street tire set (33.0 height and actually wider than either set of 285's I've had), and they did not require a BMC, but did require removing the mud flaps and trimming the front bumper area.

285/75/17's - those require a BMC no matter what. Stick with a OEM-ish offset and you should be fine with 285/70/17s. Lift or no-lift.

Does the lack of a lift when running 285/70/17s impact rubbing when flexed though?

I just put 285 BFG K02 on trd pro rims on a stock 2018 SR5 and had to remove the front mudflaps, pull back the front wheel liner and trim the lower part of the bumper. At least now i can turn without rubbing at full lock. TBD if any rubbing while offroading

Awesome thanks for the info! Going to save up and get the Duratracs in 285 and hope they fit *crosses fingers*

I just measured my new stock TRD Off Road, and it's tight up there! With stock Dunlop 265/70-17s on factory 7.5s, there's barely an inch of clearance fore and aft of the front tires when they're pointed straight ahead. When they're turned, the clearance goes down to about a half inch.

I hope 285s work out well for you! Looking forward to seeing the results.

Is anyone running 285 K02’s on Ray10s or similar on a 2.5” lift? I finally have all my goodies but trying to double check the rub first before install this weekend. I assume these will fit without a BMC but may require some mid flaps and bumper mods. I did a quick search but didn’t find an answer.

Here’s my parts list in my garage:

285/70/R17 KO2 c-rated tires
17x8.5” Ray10 wheels, 4.3” backspace, -10mm offset
Dobinson 302/505 coils and shocks for 2.5”/1.5” lift
10mm trim spacer

Getting my new lift/wheels/tires installed later this month. Wanted to see what T4R thinks about the likelihood that I'll need modifications to make things work without rubbing.

Lift: Toytec/Bilstein 5100 3/2
JBA UCAs
Wheels: Method MR312 width 8.5 offset 0 backspacing 4.75
Tires: Falken AT3W 285/70/17

The only thing that worries me is JBA recommends at or less than factory backspacing on aftermarket wheels. My current backspacing is 4.5 on my 7.5 trail wheels. Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

You will likely be OK on the control arms. You will almost definitely need a fender liner mod and remove your front mud flaps. Possible you will need a BMC but if your shop is worth anything and knows how to do a proper alignment, you should be fine.

After over a decade in IT, I can assure you they are not.

After 3.5 decades in IT (now retired), I can assure you - you have UNDERSTATED the problem & the downfall of society is banging on the front door. :sobbing:

Hey folks, FNG here with a question that has probably been answered plenty. I've spent quite a bit of time searching the forums, reading blogs, asking friends and still haven't gotten the amount of information I need so I'm just gonna be THAT new guy and ask:

I've got a stock T4R TRD OR. I've got some money set aside for the first modification, and it seems that getting rid of the stock H/T tires will be the best bang for the buck. I know that 285/70 17 can be fit to my stock suspension with some minor trimming to prevent rubbing on road, but I'm trying to figure out what it will do to the off road capabilities.

Obviously running bigger tires has pros and cons, and 285/70 is where I would like to end up so I'd rather just fit them now rather than buy a set of smaller A/T and then resize once I get a lift. Buying the final size once will save a nice chunk of change. But I'm worried that once I fit larger tires under the stock suspension I'll have compromised some of the flex in the suspension.

Can anyone advise how well 285/70 17s work off road on stock suspension? Will I be constantly jamming tires into things when the road gets bumpy? Will I have ruined my articulation? I just don't have the cash now to do both tires and lift, but I know the stock tires will hold the 4R back until they're swapped out.

Thanks, and again sorry for the typical new guy post. I looked, I promise! :sorry:

If you haven't yet seen this yet, it's worth a look:

Biggest Tires on Stock 4Runner? Biggest Tires on 4Runner with Lift Kit?

I'm in a similar position as you are, and I did some measurements on my stock setup to see what I was up against. With the same AT20 tires you have, at full lock, I have no greater than 1/2" available before the inside or outside edge of the tires rub anything inside the wheel wells. Also, these AT20s have really "round" tapered tread and sidewalls. The typical ATs like KO2s are more square and blocky. Once you go larger, you're ripe for those blocks grabbing something. Those are the things I'm on the lookout for as I consider how much to upsize. A lift is in my future to help minimize that. But for me, until I'm lifted, I'm not planning on using a 285.

That's just me, though. Tire and wheel choice makes a difference. If the AT20s were a better tire and available in a 285, I wouldn't be afraid to try it on stock wheels. The profile of that tread might be easier to work with. More aggressive tires, well, I predict rubbage.

Therein lies the problem...SR5 is 7" wide wheel and a 285/70/17 tire is rated for a minimum of 7.5" wheel..could have something to do with it.

for factory stock SR5 or TRD PRO 17" x 7" wheel to run 285/70R17 tire manufacturer recommended wheel width of 7.5-9" topic subject.
There's no definite answer to this question/myth.

thousands and thousands and endless people are safely and/or had run 285/70R17 on 7" wide (including myself) wheels before. If you think it makes you feel unsafe, just don't do it. But I've heard of people off road pretty hard and even aired down to 15 psi w/o any issues running that tire size on 7" width rim.

The only problem you might encounter is probably only abnormal tire wear. The center of the tire will probably wear faster. Other then that I've never heard of any reported issues even though tire manufacturers don't recommend it...

Stock TRD Pro with 285s

So I read the chart and it's still unclear if I can fit 285s on the truck without rubbing. The chart doesn't specify if the TRD Pro model. Is it true that the Stock TRD Pro is lifted 1 inch higher than the other models? Has anyone put some KO2 on their stock TRD Pro without any rubbing.

TIA
