Good options for running boards? (Off-Road model)

So, i have locked onto the 4runner i will be buying. However, this particular one does not come with any type of running boards to assist with entering the cab. I found a black set that appear to work well, and look good. I'll post the link below, but are there any other good options out there that are not too large? I do not want to get them stuck on debris/rocks/etc if off-roading.

if you plan to take it offroad often, running boards can cause big damage to the rocker panels. Same goes for nerf bars.
Consider rock sliders which attach to the frame, and can take the abuse.
 
I glanced over that thread, thank you both. When i take delivery of the truck, i'll try and make my decision then. I know i am going lift and tires first, tho!

I like my metaltech OPOR sliders very much, and I didn't have to wait a long time to get them. I've ordered a couple of other items from metaltech since, and I highly recommend them. They are a great company that cares about getting your products to you without any runaround.

I took mine off after 2 years, sandblasted and repainted. They're just like new again. Well, I also touched up the underside scratches for good measure. :)

But I don't have any experience with others, so take my recommendation as far as the great customer service and fast shipping. I had mine shipped raw and painted them once I received them.
 
No such thing. As mentioned above, there is one answer and one answer only: Sliders. They also double as a jacking point in sticky situations. Neither a running board or "tube step" can take the weight of the car when jacking it up.

I am not recommending changing your order because I don't know your needs, but I do want to give you some information to consider.

Tires are usually the first mod most people recommend to increase your off road capability. After that, many recommend protecting the rockers with rock sliders and ensuring you have adequate skid plate protection for your vitals under the truck. In it's stock form, the 4Runner is a very capable off road vehicle and can probably handle more than what 90% of us would ever throw at it. Check out what MTN4RNR does with his non-lifted vehicle. Also a lift may make you feel more capable than you ready for and it may get you stuck on a rock causing a couple thousand dollars worth of body repair to fix those dented rockers.

Again just something for you to consider if you are considering doing more off roading than mall crawling. I will agree that a lift will make your vehicle look 100% cooler.
 
I recommend C4Fab sliders cuz that is what I have..:usa2:

Sliders are a little more work and more expensive than running boards, but well worth the investment. I had to get these powder coated but after that they are an easy bolt on design and do their job well. Plus they look great!

It will be mostly dirt roads and mud for awhile, until i get it all lined out. So, no worries about getting undercarriage or rocker damage. Thanks for your input tho! Agreed on a lift and tires making the rig look 100% better haha.

The rock sliders need to be stout and not just to jack the car on. They have to carry the weight of the car when you slide over a boulder or log when off-roading. When I got my 2015 4Runner Trail that's the first mod I made. Domello rock sliders, just the plain straight tubes. They make a good step too.

You may want to order from a local fabricator if it will reduce shipping costs.

Still waiting on the tires, skid plates and lift. I have a kitchen to remodel and some of you know how expensive that can be. But I've bent the hell out of my stock skid plate several times.

Funny. I asked because my rig didn't come with any side/running boards whatsoever. Its a little difficult for my 5'2" wife to hop up into it without a step lol.

Look for the tube bars people are removing from their stock runners and selling on ebay or CL.
That's the cheapest option till you can invest in some sliders.

Maybe even I'd sell you mine if you're interested.

A few questions before making any purchase, I know my rig has no KDSS:

I have a TRD off-road, do I need cut rocker panels or no?


If there's only options for the Pro, SR5 and Trail, which one would I need?

The trail would be your version. As Trail name was changed to Off-Road.
