With a soft suspension, even small bumps can nearly bottom out the shocks. With a more firm suspension, the shock is able to better absorb the impact from the bump and less energy is transferred to the rest of the vehicle. I'm not the best at explaining it, all I know is it made a noticeable difference on my rig, as it has with many others.
