GPS Mounting Options

Since I do not have the factory NAV, I am looking into getting a small GPS unit. I hate the way most of the kits come with the mount for the windshield. I have seen other mounting solutions for the vents, but not sure how they would work.

Does anyone have any pics or advice for mounting a GPS in the 5th Gen. Right now I am leaning on getting a vent mount and placing it on the drivers side middle vent set.

I just purchased a Garmin GPS with lifetime maps (from Costco.com) for $129.99 w free shipping (Nuvi 255 - 3.5"). I was going with the beanbag mount that Garmin makes. There are cheaper ones available with the same concept. This seems to be the best solution because you can unsnap it and put the GPS and base in the glove-box or center console and it is gone from prying eyes.

I also use the bean bag thing, but will be switching to the RAM mount that connects to the rear view mirror. Just ordered it the other day and here is the link to it.

Thanks for the help guys. I am interested in the RAM mount. Could you post some pics after install. I think several others would be interested as well.
 
I've got a $100 Magellan that I wrap with a sweat sock and stick in the cup holder. I wouldn't recommend mounting it so far away from the windscreen area though, if you need to view your GPS a lot while driving.

i use the suction cup mount that came with my nuvi and stick it just to the right of the plug in the picture above (on the dark silver)

hmmm, i can't remember if it has fallen yet in our 5th gen. we have it in a similiar position in our 4th gen and it has fallen, but very infrequently. a little tiny dab of moisturizer lotion seems to help keep it stick longer. i like it because it is still easy to take off and shove in the center console box.

That Ram mirror mount looks very interesting. I wonder if you could wire it with an Invisicord like they do with Radar Dectors? That would be a sweet setup!

I went with the ProClip mount to the center air vent. This is probably the third vehicle I've put one in. I'll snap a picture of it this afternoon. Very secure, easy to reach, and still able to pop the Garmin off and throw it in the glove-box when necessary. Will probably be drilling the dash to route the power cable into the glove-box or just hard wire it to the fuze panel.
 
I use the suction cup mount and put the base where the suction cup mounts to in the flat area near the clock. I don't use the gps much but have it just in case.
 
I've been using a couple dollar vent mount in my last three vehicles. It's sturdy and convenient if you need to mess with it while driving. I'll post a pic later...
 
I mount a Garmin Nuvi on the dash of my work truck, right in the center, with the screen angled slightly towards the driver.

I use a generic cell phone/GPS mount that you can get at Walmart or any Pep Boys/O'Reilly Auto Parts/AutoZone, etc. and secure it to the dash with 3M double-sided tape (the "industrial" grade).

I've used this method on my last 3 work trucks and it NEVER comes unstuck until you pry up one side to remove it. No residue, either. It's about 6 bucks for a roll of the stuff, which will last quite a long time. You can get it at Home Depot.

My job takes me on some pretty gnarly terrain and in all kinds of weather/temps and this stuff won't let go until you want it to.

I also use it to mount 2 cell phones, a Sirius receiver, an iPod, a Sat Phone, a Surefire rechargable flashlight, a 4-outlet AC cable splitter, the head unit for my emergency lights, and a 400-watt power inverter (not all on the dash, obviously). I should have bought stock in 3M a long time ago.

I have mine mounted on the right side dash underneath the "Passenger Airbag" warning light. I will snag a picture tomorrow.

I attached some pics. I currently have the charger plugged into the glove compartment, but plan on hard-wiring it when I have time.

Made a custom mount for my Garmin nuvi 6". Made it out of kydex.. Heated, molded to fit.
Removed the head unit to hide the wires, installed a 12v socket near internal fuse box.

I have the factory nav. But it sucks and I'll be damned if I pay $400 to update it. My Garmin has lifetime map updates AND my backroads map book offroad maps on it too.

Mount is. 08 kydex heated to 400 degrees and molded to GPS and mount location.

Not a professional job but I'm happy!!! GPS is removable (Velcro inside mount to hold GPS firm). I don't miss the clock. Just added clock to my Garmin screen.

LOVE the location!!!!!

edit: after creating this post I realized that it's quite old, but since I uploaded all pictures already I decided to keep it just in case somebody us still looking for the mount.


I have my mount for many years and I think it's the best GPS location. It doesn't interfere with any displays and controls, doesn't obstruct my front view and It's easy to see with minimum distraction. Mount itself (on last picture) costs probably under $10 and I think I got it on e-bay long time ago. Like maybe 10 years ago or more. I got a new GPS since then and just removed old Garmin bracket from the mount and put a new one. Nowadays I would try to get it on Amazon and read all the reviews. Some mounts are garbage, but this one has springs in the mounting arms and I have no issues with it, holds very well on all kind of bumpy roads and trails and not very hard to remove. And I like vertical GPS map orientation because I can see more of road ahead.
