About two weeks ago, my 1998 5sp didn't start on the first turn over (it didnt make any noise, it was as if the ignition was separate from the car..it took 3 tries before I got it to start). I had been expecting this for a quite a while, as the battery was from 2008. So, needless to say, i went in about a week ago, changed the battery, and thought it was a nonissue going forward.
fast forward to monday..EVERY DAY this week, whenver I start driving after the vehicle has been shut off, my 4runner takes at least 3-4 tries to start. I put the key in the ignition, i turn it over, and i hear the *BEEP BEEP* that you get when the keys are turned over a certain amount, the radio works just fine, but the dang car just doesn't start. I hear a 'zzzzzzzzzzzz' coming from the engine when i try. I just wait 5 seconds, try again, rinse, repeat, until it starts. Then when it starts, i have no issues until I shut off the car again. Is this a starter or alternator? Please advise guys, thanks. I'm leaning toward starter, but I'd like to consult with the experts first. Should I just go to the dealer a buy a new starter and install it per the guide on here?
