GX470 Roof Console install

So, did you install it? Get everything to work? I have the pinouts (see pics), and decided to not use the Lexus mic it comes with (I don't have the pinouts for them). Anyway, I tried to crack open the sunglass holder and I did get it to open very slightly, but not all the way. I did this so I can remove the Lexus mic and install the Toyota OEM mic I got years ago. Anyway, I could never get it to open than 1/4 in. I was afraid of damaging it, so I snapped it back together.



For the LED lights (ambient), what did you use to connect it?



Also, did you connect the lights to the passenger overhead lights for it turns on when you open the front doors?

Hey bud. Sorry I dont get notifications anymore on Tapatalk and dont check here as often. But, no, I havent done it yet either! I had planned to that weekend but had an issue with my stereo (actually a CarPC) that consumed my freetime. I still want to swap it out soon though.

I'm torn on where to grab power for the LEDs...at least to have them work how I'd want to. I could always run it down to the dash lights and just have it come on with them though.

I was just going to tap on the radio power. LEDs (supposed to) last forever. It is this option or tap the wire when the dash lights turn on.

I'm on the verge of making my OEM NAV's voiceNav/BackCamera/Microphone working. I figure, while I have the dash apart, may as well do the GX overhead console mod AND install an in-monitor Gentex mirror. (purchased this years ago) Fun fun fun (not).

I got mine installed and wired up. Ambient LEDs are very nice, having the door lights (map lights) turn on when the doors are opened sure is nice as well. I never got the mic to work. Not sure what went wrong (I checked the wiring, schematics, etc, but I think the mic was bad), nor do I care b/c I installed a GROM AUDIO USB3 module with the bluetooth accessory (allows music and phone via bluetooth). I have yet to try it, point is a I have a plan B for a mic. Anyway, I like this mod and thought it was worth the trouble to install it.

While I had everything apart, I installed a Gentex mirror.

Instead of wiring the ambient LEDs to a 12v radio source, I tapped into the center console beverage holder lights. Doing this enable them to dim with the rheostat, so........ duh, winning!

EDIT: To have the maps lights turn on when a door opens, I tapped the 3 wire white ribbon cable (middle wire) in the A-pillar. Doing this enables this AND the lights dim out when the doors are locked, just like factory.

I gave up on my install. The sunglasses holder would interfere with the headliner causing a bind when it opened.

Were the wires getting in the way?I can see that happening. I "hung" the console with string so I could easily connect the wires and whatnot. Otherwise what is binding? Mine swopes open without issue.

Nice! Glad you got it sorted out and working. Despite my slacking, I'm still doing this at some point. It just keeps getting pushed back for other projects with my limited free time.

How bright are the ambient lights? Enough to notice and give off a slight light, just enough to see things night?

They are barely noticeable. Bear in mind, I have the footwells LEDs I installed (on the same circuit as these) and those drown out the overhead LEDs. (I know that sounds like the footwells are bright as hell, but they are not). Anyway, when driving in the dark and if you raise you right hand, you will notice an amber glow. I love it. My parent's Lexus (Lexi) have them (but in a different color). The light coming from the GX console does NOT distract in any way (they are too dim for that).

I'll try to get a better pic tonight.

Thanks. That gives me a good idea. I have footwell LEDs as well so they'll have some competition for output.

Completely forgot about this post. Thought I would update it with a "better" picture of the GX470 overhead console ambient lights (2 little dots at the top of the photo). Still not the greatest, but it does show them relative to the LEDs I installed at the footwells. As you can see, I took this picture in my garage with the parking lights on (vLed marker lights..... bright suckers..)
