HAM and CB install

I am going to be mounting Yaesu FT-8800R and Cobra 75 WX ST radios in my 4runner.

My questions are about the mounts for the 8800R. The antenna I am going to get is the NR770HB Dualband Mobile Antenna (Link) and I am trying to find a mount to where I can put it on the back hatch. So far the NCG RS-520 (Link) is looking like it will be the one I am going to use. Does this sound about right?

Now for the CB I havent even found an antenna or a mount for this one yet. I was thinking about going with a firestik since I have an extra antenna laying in my garage. Any help on this?

I had my CB antenna mounted on my roof rack, although it appears that wont work for you.

I will be replacing the antenna with a wilson steel whip with roof mount and using the hole from the XM fin, although if you are set on the firestik then that isn't much help either.

I saw the thread about doing that and I may go that route. Which wilson are you going to get? I had a Wilson 1000 on my Tacoma.

Any pictures of it mounted?

I have a 4th gen, but here ya go....I also havent hooked the CB up yet, I mounted here to see if this is where I want it. I have also since mounted a spring shock to it, so it sits higher, I can run out and grab a pic if you want.

I got the Wilson 1000. Haven't installed it yet.

I looked into those tailgate mounts and decided otherwise. It seemed to me that they would scratch up the paint, or come loose or wiggle.

I may go back to a Wilson 1000 because that is what I ran for a few years and it worked great for me.

It comes with a rubber "mat" that fits on the inside if the bracket so what touches the paint is protected. As far as coming loose, I haven't had mine on long enough to say, but there is always thread lock :) I also have a 36" lil wil as back up in case I don't get good reception with the firestick, or simply don't like it

I thought about one of these.
What about it springing back and thwacking the truck if it hits a tree?

Probably gonna go the Antman mod way .

good point! hadn't thought about that.

First I'd like to say kudos to Presta24!

Now Harper7 and Presta24 - ever here about/see the 'ol tennis ball trick? You drill/make a hole in a tennis ball big enough for the antenna to pass through but small enough so that the ball doesn't fall down on the antenna when mounted.

Place the tennis ball as high or as low as needed on the antenna to protect the vehicle should the antenna spring back after encountering a branch or other object.

When you've finished driving in the out-back, the tennis ball can be removed and reused at a later time, or you can just leave it installed. It shouldn't cause any changes in the antenna's SWR when it's in place!

One more thing...Presta24, I'd raise that mount as high as possible to get better SWR and range...especially when running CB (lack of RF power on CB).
