FYI, 'Glock' has actually evolved from a specific manufacturer to a 'style' of gun offered by many manufacturers. The Springfield XD and the S&W M&P are both variants of the Glock polymer handgun with the internal hammer. So, if that is the style you are set on, you have many options, not just Glock.

The other two most popular handgun 'styles' are the 1911 and the M9. Research all three styles before you start comparing manufacturers.
 
I have a Sig P226 40 and love shooting it. I also have a G19. I prefer the Sig by far. I don't like the way the G19 fits in my hand. My friend has a H & K 40 that is really nice to shoot.
 
Glocks dont accidentally discharge they are discharged negligently! There are 3 safetys on a glock. External locks are overrated and a hindrance in the heat of the moment! If you know wtf you are doing I would rate glock (especially the 19) one of the best all around defensive guns. ANYONE who claims different need more training and needs to get off of youtube.

THIS would be the only argument that could be made but even that is remedied in 3rd GEN and later by a grip reduction... 4th GEN has interchangeable backstraps.

While I agree with most of Stiflers comments (neither my Walther nor my Glock have external safeties), I don't agree on the grip statement. While different size back-straps accommodate different hand sizes, the angle of a Glock (grip to barrel) is what made Glock's special and usually differs between brands (S&W, Walther, Sig, etc) anyway.

It is that difference in angle that makes certain handguns work better for an individual because it works better with their natural stance, grip, body dimensions, etc. When you pick up your weapon it should preferably line up naturally and not have to be forced/trained to be (significantly) different from your natural grip. This way you will be more comfortable and more accurate in your shooting (generally speaking).

I do like the decocker on my P99, but that's not applicable on the G26 since it's not double action (DA).

I have a p229 that I carry in winter with over 7k rounds and not one failure.

I had a SIG P226 in 9mm. I sold it because it just didn't fit my hand. I also had an HK USPc .40 that I sold. It fit my hand well, but the DA trigger sucked and I just don't like the HK USP mag release. I also didn't care for the high bore axis of the HK and SIG. Both the SIG and the HK were reliable and accurate, though the SIG did require a trip to the factory for a taller front sight.

Just goes to show how much handguns are a very personal taste. What works for me may not work for you.

As you might guess by my handle, I prefer 1911s, warts and all (and the 1911 does, indeed, have warts).

Accidentally.... negligently... all went bang when someone didn't want them to. All with people who were trained and familiar with firearms. We are all human and we all make mistakes. An extra thumb safety on my pistol doesn't bother me when compared to "negligently" catching my t-shirt on the trigger or having my holster fold into the trigger guard while in a movie theater.

looks like a cheap leather holster that wasnt maintained to me. that is negligence on the fire arm owners part not the fire arm.

articles say nothing about method of carry. For all you know he could have been "mexican" carry and was dumb enough to put his finger inside the trigger guard (or dumb enough to mexican carry). Also note he was in a nightclub, somewhere its illegal to carry a fire arm. Chances are he could have been intoxicated, was that sarcasm in your post when you said he was a smart "feller" because I believe the article makes the opposite very apparant IMO.

there's been plenty of accidental discharges with handguns that have safeties as well.. just saying

guns shoot projectiles they're gonna hit the wrong thing some times. you just have to be as vigilantly aware as possible with any gun and how you handle it.

one of the first rules you'll learn in a class is "always treat a gun as if it were loaded" and "only point the gun at what you have intentions of shooting"

Have to agree with this in that you should get what fits you and your needs. I also had a USP 40. With large hands this gun never seemed to fit. I now carry a Kimber Pro Carry and can't imagine anything else.

Lot's of comments here about revolvers ... my $.02 on the revolver, although capacity is limited, size is good for concealment and ease of use should the event arise is hard to beat. All that said, get a .22 to practice along with your regular carry and shoot shoot shoot shoot and shoot some more.

I agree with rebel. That guy was a complete moron. That holster was cheap crap to begin with (Galco) and was obviously worn out. If you put your gun in a holster that looks like this:

then you deserve what happens to you. Stupid should hurt. Like far too many in our country, he then goes on to avoid personal responsibility for his actions and blame the gun, instead of himself.

I like 1911s. I carry them. I also carry Glocks. I don't think that the thumb safety or grip safety make the 1911 any safer than a Glock. Both can be carried safely. Both can be mishandled. Get training from a reliable instructor. Practice. Consider action competition (IDPA, USPSA, etc.). And frickin' pay attention when you are handling a gun.

I think if you love someone, give them a glock 19 or 23. That said, I love my Hk usp's and love love LOVE HK45c. Guns are like tattoos, you don't get just one. There is one for every occasion. I keep an extra piece in the vehicle all the time.
 
From my shooting experience, I will offer you this:

The Glock 19 is probably the best all around pistol you could buy, whether you are an expert or beginner. I have shot XD's/XDM's, Sigs, Berettas, etc... After all of the nice pistols I have owned, I returned to the Glock 19. It's cheap to shoot, cheap to buy, accurate, highly customizable and has a trigger reset that you can set your watch to. The compact size is concealable but it holds 15 rounds. 9mm with bonded bullets like the HST or Gold Dot can perform very similarly to .40 S&W and you get two more in the mag. Some complain about the snap of .40 and I am not one of them.

There are many ballistic gelatin tests you can review and you will see that 9/.40/.357 Sig all perform pretty closely. The next real step up in an auto is .45ACP and the one beyond that is 10mm. As a beginner, 9mm fits what you need really well. The site I frequent is AR15.com and the overwhelming favorite of all pistols on that site is the Glock 19, followed by the M&P.

If capacity and price are not an issue, you might just fall I love with a 1911 like the Ruger SR1911 or the Remington R1. I have a Kimber that I love and I will admit that shooting it comes more naturally than any of the polymers (so I just shot my G19 until I got really good).

If we're on the topic of how it feels in the hand, the H&K P30 is fantastic, right there with the SA Browning Hi Power. No idea how the P30 shoots though.
 
WFO Racer...Factory boxed ammo is just as good in a pistol as a reload (as long as it's not garbage ammo).

For target/in vehicle carry, I recommend the Springfield XDM in 9mm.
Don't let anyone tell you that 9mm is underpowered. Federal makes HST 9mm +p...the round turns into 6 knife blades in soft tissue and expands to almost 7/8 of an inch diameter. 396 ft lbs of muzzle energy.
The XDM is easy/natural to shoot, accurate, reliable, high mag capacity and has many safety features/redundancy. Another big advantage of 9mm is that ammo is cheap compared to 40, 45, etc.

For personal carry, I recommend a S&W 640 .357 magnum. Easy to conceal, hard hitter and reliable - goes bang EVERY time you pull the trigger. Steel frame is a must, Airweights with Scandium frames transmit too much shock into your hand.
