Hard to find Specs, Info & Measurements on 231mm 13WL Tundra Calipers & Rotors

Ok so I just got some 231mm calipers and rotors off a Tundra at the local pick n pull. The rotors have a bit of surface rust, but I'm planning on getting them resurfaced. Should I replace the pads even if they have a good amount of life left in them? Anything particular I should do with the calipers? I've never dealt with brakes before so this is all foreign to me.

If the pads are still good, no need to replace them. Nothing I know of you'd need to do with the calipers unless you want to paint them? Might grab some CRC anti squeak for good measure. You're gonna need to cut a chunk off the splash guard to fit them though you prob already know that. Bolt em up and hook up the brake lines and bleed the brakes. Start with passenger side rear, drivers side rear, passenger side front, and lastly drivers side front.

Thanks for the write up Big Fish!! This is incredibly detailed and will help my installation next week for sure. Anyone ever dealt with green brake fluid before? I bled my brakes the other day and it came out very green. The fluid was flushed a few months ago because it was green and it is now green once again. I can't seem to figure it out. Any help would be much appreciated and I look forward to the new Tundra brakes for sure.

Sweet, I'll definitely want to pick up some anti squeak. Can't stand my brakes squeaking. I might paint the calipers if I get bored.

I will be a member of the 231 club this week. Picked up a set of calipers, rotors and pads at a local junk yard for $110 for everything.

The truck only had 63,xxx miles on it, the pads are nearly new (although they are car quest brand :/ ) and the rotors look amazing and the calipers cleaned up very nice. I though about getting them resurfaced however after a little WD-40, scotchbrite pads and some elbow grease, they look almost brand new.

I will also be doing new lbj's (oem) and a set of camburg coilovers at the same time.

Did I mention that we will be doing the same thing on my buddys truck at the same time? lol

Going to be a great sunday.

Nice, that's the same price I got my Tundra stuff for. I can return my old rotors and calipers back for $20, but I feel like I can get more for them on craigslist or something. I might have to look into cleaning mine up first before getting them resurfaced.

Did you pick up those Camburgs that were on sale here? They looked to be a good deal as long as the seals weren't leaking.

I didnt have any core charge on mine so if i can sell em and make some money back that would be great.

If you want a quick and easy way to clean em up, go to your local autozone or shucks etc. and get the 3M body surface prep kit. It comes with a chuck for your drill that allows you to screw in different prep pads. I used the medium pad to clean off the heavy rust and oxidation, then the fine pad to polish it up. it also has a couple sanding pads that i used to clean off the hub and wheel mating surfaces to ensure no burs or humps. Costs $19 and i know ill use it again for other things.

And yes on the coilovers that were on here. sending payment tomorrow or tuesday.

Will this OME five spoke work?

Does anyone know if this OME Tacoma wheel will work with 231's? Is this the OME five star "flower" wheel?

Lucky! I went all over the Vancouver Lower Mainland area wreckers and had a hell of a time finding ANY Tundra/Sequoia brake parts... the only wrecker that had any, wanted $400 for everything (rotors, calipers, pads) !!!!! The larger wreckers were quite snotty and said: "...we don't sell brake parts, as they could present a liability issue for us..." As if I would blindly install parts without checking them first! I think they probably strip the calipers and truck them to a reman outfit, and sell the rotors for scrap weight... We have few "Pick a part" wreckers here, as all of these outfits sell to the Insurance Companies first, and us poor slobs at 50% retail last... Maybe on may next trip to the USA, I'll visit some wrecking yards... I'm headed to Seattle Wa. via Wenachee Wa. in a few weeks, can anyone suggest some good wrecking yards to visit, for parts??

The best thing I can suggest to you is to go to car-parts.com and search for an 06 Tundra Caliper. There are TONS on there priced anywhere from $25 and up.

I just grabbed another set including rotors and pads for my buddy for the same $110 plus 40 shipping. They arrived today and look good. A little more used than mine but still a great buy.

Rotor Issue

I've got the right side completed and everything fits nicely. Now I'm on the left side. Dust shield trimmed up nice. Caliper mounts well. Putting the rotor on and it will only turn about 90°. It gets stuck pretty solid. Not rubbing the dust shield at all. Take the rotor off and hub rotates 360°. Any ideas? Need help bad as I have one more day to finish this. The rotors are OEM Toyota rotors. As stated the 1st rotor works perfect on the right side. Thanks for any advice.

? On wheels I got today for TBU ? 231 or 199?

So I picked up a set of 4 T-100 steel wheels with 265x75xR16 with 70% studded tires for 130$ just hoping the will work? They look like a pic I saw of steel Tacoma wheels that where said to work with 231mm calipers but now I can't locate that thread to confirm? Anyone? Is there any performance diff between 231 and 199 or is it just the angle of where the line mounts, pressure increase? More clearance w/ a 199mm On a 16" steel wheel would suck to get a rock in the pics I saw on build tread. I to would like to avoid the extra wear and tear of spacers and if I had to go that route would opt for steel over aluminum, but its my ass that gotta drive it and know its gonna hold up w/ 30,000 $ worth of your buddy's sleds on a Mnt road in inclamate weather but that's just me! I'll put faith in good old American Steel!!!

Any opinions or facts that may help would be great!
Thanx, Rod

TBU Complete

Many thanks to BigFish and others. His writeup and advice were excellent.
:thanks:
Don't make any assumptions as I did last night. I assumed since the right rotor fit perfectly, that the left rotor would too. Not the case. The left rotor had enough interference from the dust shield in the center (same spot as BigFish noted) that the rotor would not rotate more than 90°. I didn't hear any metal-on-metal so I didn't know what the issue was until inspecting closer this morning. After a little trimming, everything went smoothly. Good luck all. This was an easy upgrade.

Will this work?

Can anyone confirm that this Toyota wheel works with the 231 upgrade? Can you provide pictures? Thanks.

What to do with 4Runner Rotors?

Now that this upgrade is complete, what do you do with the old rotors?
Take them to the scrap yard for a few bucks?

Yeah, they're Enkei wheels and I haven't seen any mention of them in any of the upgrade threads that I've read.

If I go the Napa route, at worst I have to return the set of 213s for the 199s, right? Should I bother with measuring the current gap between the wheel and caliper and comparing that to the caliper measurements in this thread?

I've never been able to confirm whether or not those Enkei wheels will clear the 231's. They are very similar in looks to the common stock 6-spokes, but there is a clear difference in the design of the spokes.

Did you ever confirm whether or not they fit over the 231mm calipers?

No prob, DGO-SR5! I'm glad it will be of use to you when the time comes to upgrade your brakes. I've never seen green brake fluid, though. The only think I can think of would be corrosion/contamination in the lines. Rusty metal could give the fluid a green tinge.

Does anyone know if this OME Tacoma wheel will work with 231's? Is this the OME five star "flower" wheel?

Yes, those will clear the 231's. That wheel also came stock on Tundras, for which 231's were factory equipment. Those are NOT the 5-star "flower" wheel. The "flower" wheels came on '01-'02 4Runners.

Glad to hear you got it all figured out, and thanks for using the writeup! I appreciate the feedback and the input on the thread.

Take them to the scrap yard for a few bucks?

I drop mine off @ my mechanics shop. He's got a scrap bin that gets picked up weekly. Shocks, rotors, basically anything metal can go in there. I think he actually gets paid for it by weight, so he's more than happy to take my old junk parts.

Just did the upgrade finally. I have been sitting on the parts since 11/12. The install went smooth, I took it out for a test spin and when the car would come to a complete stop it would make this grinding sound. I'm thinking it was the brakes settling in. The rotors are drilled and slotted, but the sound is gone. I think I need help bleeding them. The pedal has a lot of travel, and I didn't notice a huge upgrade over stock. Anyone local want to help??

Is this wheel the one that you are calling "flower" wheels? Me and a buddy are both about to upgrade to the Tundra brakes, and I was comparing the clearance between the stock calipers and wheels on my '99 Limited "5 Star" (which I know will work with the 231s) and his '02 Sport Edition wheels. There was a good bit more clearance for mine than his, and we want to make sure that the 231s will in fact work with his.

Yup, that's what I was referring to as the "flower" wheel. Those should clear the 231's just fine.
