I think I'll go with the 6 spoke 2003 to 2009 4runner wheels which are compatible with the 231mm upgrade. I like the look of them and they dish in which means I'll have better clearance for rocks.
But I checked offset. The 1998 4runner has 7JJx16 ET15, 7 inch wide with 15 mm offset.
The 2003 4runner has 7.5Jx17 ET30, or 7.5 inch wide with 30 mm offset.
According to this calculator, this works out to the 2003 rims sticking out 9 mm less on the outside, and 21 mm less inside clearance than the 1998 stock rims. Has anyone had this issue? Should I add a spacer? I'd rather not play with spacers.

Well after further thought getting a new set of wheels that clear the caliper is not in my budget and I have a few sets of split 3 star 16" rims. I have read that although you put in a 1/4" spacer, you only need to make 1/8" clearance. So rather than grind that off the wheels, or the caliper, why don't I split the difference and grind 1/16" off each? I have a hard time believing that taking 1/16" off the caliper is going to wreck it, if it does then I think there's some design problems there. Does anyone have access to a junk 231 mm Tundra caliper and can grind it in that spot to see how much meat there actually is there?
I'm not into spacers.
I could get the 199 mm, but after all that work why not go all the way?

If you're into the thought of preserving your ABS at all then 199s are definitely the way to go. If you don't care about the functionality of your ABS then definitely go all the way.

Mark BC a 1/4" spacer isnt going to harm a thing. I wouldnt go grinding this and then grinding that and then....Just grind the wheel or get a spacer

I saw something on SS website that made me question it so I asked the question a few weeks ago, seems like the majority of folks with the 231s end up with an ABS that locks up in lieu of pulsing under hard braking.

I'm torn now. I really wanted the 231s, but my wife drives the 4Runner often enough to make me second guess it.

I've had 2 very near misses since the 231 upgrade and the brakes worked fine. No ABS issues...nothing

I have noticed the ABS issues when braking and hitting a bump. The ABS kicks in. One set of tires feels like it locks while the others do the ABS and your truck just slides. Ive also noticed it on ice patches.
I have two close calls because of it and wife also almost got in a wreck due to it. She wont drive the truck in winter conditions at all anymore.

Take your sensors out and clean them and clean the surface where they bolt back on. Sometimes rust and debres can get in there and cause issues

No they don't fit. I went through researching all this last week. I don't want to grind either the caliper or the wheel. I don't want spacers because it isn't good for the suspension systems and it might not be centred or balanced properly. I don't want to change wheels because I have a few sets of these exact wheels and I want them interchangeable. In the end I decided I would get the 199 mm TBU which is apparently also a great improvement. It isn't very hot where I live and I don't anticipate towing anything huge.

JBurt, how do the spacers work if you don't mind me asking. Do you have any pics of them mounted ?
I do plan to pull a few of my trailers, one of which is a 14ft which I load my 4Wheeler onto and its a car hauler trailer so its no light weight trailer, no real bad but its not a dinky one.

can someone confirm 1/4" is enough to space out those wheels from hitting the 231 calipers?
