Hard to find Specs, Info & Measurements on 231mm 13WL Tundra Calipers & Rotors

can someone confirm 1/4" is enough to space out those wheels from hitting the 231 calipers?

Confirmed. But it makes putting you're wheels on a pita. The generic parts store (~$15) spacers aren't hub or lug centric, and your lug studs are just barely long enough to use them.

I dealt with them for a year and then bought some .75" bolt on spacers. They were used, but now that I know it totally worth the investment. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Link above did not work so I fixed the link. Thanks for posting it JBurt.

If you put spacers on the front do you also have to put them on the rear ????

Also, did you have to trim your factory lug bolts ?

Thanks for fixing the link. I've only got front spacers installed (rears are on a shelf still...)

No lug trimming needed for most spacers. The .75" I've got are the skinniest I've seen. I think I replaced my lug studs though, but I've swapped them out several times with different longer studs trying to make those damn crappy .25"ones work.

my calipers came in yesterday

3 out of 4 piston dust boot clips are installed wrong...not exactly pleased

these were rock auto, power stop (non red) calipers

Hi Jburt, thanks for all the useful info. Does the stock spare by chance fit with the 3/4" spacer? or the 1/4" spacer? Do you mind sharing which one you purchased?

I bought .75" BORA spacers off of SCRunner12. I don't know where he got them. They've been fine.

I know the stock spare is not compatible with the TBU, so if you get a flat in the front, you've got to move one of your rear wheels forward, then slap the spare on the back. Not horrible, but I just got a rim that works for my spare.

Thanks for responding man! That's what I figured. I was debating the 1.25" or the .75". Sounds like neither work with the stock spare so I'll just go with the .75 BORA!

Without reading through all of these pages, I have a quick bleeding question.

I just did the 13WL upgrade this weekend, and when I did it I only bled the front two calipers. Is the 3rd gen a separated system, as in, are the rears separated from the fronts? Or are they connected meaning that when you open one line you need to bleed all four brakes?

I recently rejoined this site due to forgetting my original email address i used years ago when i first bought my 2000 Runner. This week i have read pretty much all 61 pages of this thread and will be doing this upgrade soon. I picked up some Sequoia/Tundra Spit star wheels and tires this evening for $180.00 The tires are shot but i will clean the wheels up and get some new Michelins come spring. After reading through this, i pretty much decided I will go with some Napa calipers so i don't have to worry about shipping them back to an eBay or Amazon seller if something is wrong. Rotors will probably be Brembo or another known brand and Toyota OEM pads. After getting to the last pages of this thread, i see someone mentioned the ABS being activated with the 231 kit. I don't tow anything with the truck and the past 8 years i have only averaged 3000-3500 miles a year but i do want better braking but i want to avoid the brakes locking up in heavy traffic due to the ABS issue. Would i be better off going with the 199 calipers since i will also still be able to use the stock spare wheel if i do hit a flat? The only downside I'm seeing now is my current 16" split stars have new Michelins on them with 3300 miles and I'm hoping i can sell them. I know this thread is old but I'm hoping someone will reply and give me some more details on the ABS issue.

BFAD- Great write up and everyone else that chimed in with pics and experiences.

Thanks and i look forward to more info

Question about aftermarket rims

I have the 231mm calipers and the 3 spoke 16 inch rims that require grinding.

I'm a little nervous to do this because I don't want to throw off the wheel balance. I was looking at purchasing American Racing 16x8 Baja Wheels.

Specs:16"x8" 6x139.70
Backspacing: 4.50
Bore:108

I'd hate to spend the money and find out these also need grinding down. Does anyone have an idea?

All help is appreciated. Thanks

I'd like to know if these will clear the 231mm calipers too. I have a set of American Racing Mojave Teflon's with the same specs that I had on a 2001 Tacoma. I've scoured the web and have only found someone with the 17x8's on this site. I'm getting ready to do the brakes and have had some trouble deciding on the 231 vs the 199.

I need help

So I have no idea how you all refer to these wheels. The original owner told me they were the factory rims but I have no clue. They are 16" rims and I want to know if the 231mm calipers will clear them with no grinding or spacers. I tried to attach a photo. Any help or wisdom would be greatly appreciated. I apologise if I overlooked this in previous pages. I tried my best to search for an answer first.

A lot of people say they have no issue with the 231's causing ABS problems...but it seems that they live in mostly dry climates. People that have issues seem to be in snow and ice or complain about it on bumps (which I think is a symptom of a different problem)...I grew up in MI, live in OR now...did the 231's on my wife's 2000 Limited, the brake power is great...no issues on bumps or dry pavement...on the ice/snow you do need to know where you engagement point is because you go from braking to ABS quickly...but the ABS works just as it is supposed to, so I don't think of it as being dangerous.

I am going to put the 199's on my 1999 in the next for months solely for the chance to compare the two.

I call them the split spokes. Not sure if that's right. from what I've seen is that they do require grinding. Was trying to figure out if my 1.5" spacers will work.

BTW, my cost was SIGNIFICANTLY higher than what most people pay because I used OEM stuff. I hate doing things twice so I dropped the extra coin to have the highest quality components the first time around. When buying new parts, you can get this done for $320-$420 depending on how much you shop around and look for deals. If you go to a Junkyard, you could probably do it for even less.

I'm a little confused. Did you go with the NAPA remanufactured calipers (which are pictured) or did you go OEM calipers which are $300+ each? The 13WL NAPA calipers are fine, right? You mention using OEM in the quote above, but it looked like you were using the NAPA calipers. Thanks for clarifying.

Hey gang. For what it's worth, I've been researching the hell out of this mod as I am ready for a brake job and thought it would be worth the few extra bucks for the extra stopping power if it didn't cause any troubles.

Anyhow...seeing that Steve from Sonoran Steel is a well respected source on this board, I shot him an email to ask for some more details about the info that is on the SS site.

Here is my response. I added a couple comments in the brackets... "231 with shorter aftermarket pads (I asked about the chamfers on the aftermarket pads) is the same thing as a 199 with a factory pad that will stop better. I have a 2001. If you have a 1996-2000 your booster will not be able to run the 231 to it's full extent anyway. Only 2001-2002 can. So all your results will be the same (I take this as being in regards to the 96-00), no matter what you do. As you don't have the hydraulics to run the larger calipers. Factory 4Runner brakes with a correctly working booster are actually fine."

With that being said, I'm leaning towards the 231 when I service the current OEM brakes on my 2001. My hopes are that my OEM "Coke Bottle" or "Flower" wheels will not require any modification or spacers. I also have a set of American Racing 16" Mojave Teflons that I hope will fit as well. The other part of me says just go with the 199's so I don't have any fitment issues. I don't know if I really need the 231's seeing as I'm in the Midwest and don't do all that much trail riding, mountain roads, or towing. I'm just shooting for a DD that will be most capable when I need it.

Please post when you do your upgrade. Do you already have your parts list together and where you are buying them from? Im leaning towards Napa Calipers and some slotted rotors from a company i have purchased from before for my RSX. Pads may be OEM but I'm up in the air on that one.

Haven't done it yet, but this is my current Amazon Wish List...cheapest I could find most of it...as for calipers they will come from Rock Auto, Power Stop S2632 - I think about $106 after core return on those.

OEM Pads - 04465-0C012 $65
Centric SS Brake Lines - 950.44007 $39
OEM Shims - 04945-04012 $43
OEM Rotors - 03512-0C011 $70

Please add TRD Team 16 to the list compatible wheels.

OP, could you please add these rims to the list? I had to scour the forums for several hours after not seeing it on your list. They clear the Tundra 231mm brake calipers...

Ended up just going with the smaller Tundra caliper and I noticed a big change over the stock calipers still. Sorry I couldn't get an answer for you. Love the American Racing rims though!
