Have a lifted 3rd gen running 33s ?? I need your help

My lift kit (3inch cornbread spacers/downey rear springs) has been sitting in my garage for some time now waiting on me to get around to getting some tires/rims.

Ive been reading about tires and im a little concerned now with going to a 33 inch tire.

Is it really all that necessary to regear if I move up to a 285/75/16 tire ?? What are your guys experience with 33s ??

Also, am I in grave danger of breaking more shit with the bigger tire ? I'm not that hard on the runner... she has to get the woman around with no problems so I cant tear it up... but I dont want stuff breaking 6 months from now because I went with a 33inch tire.

Also, what have you guys experienced with gas mileage?
stock geared and regeared.

I'd like to avoid regearing the runner because then it will only put additional stress on the already weak front hubs ect.. if it comes down to it ,it will just get 31 inch tires.

Now for the good part what kind of tires you ask ?

Im going with some TSL Thronbirds. I chose this tires for its aggressive looks, highly capable in the muck, and decent tread profile for the street with still allowing for some big deep lugs for the sludge. Rims with be some bullet hole flat black steels. Every one keeps telling me to go with some baja wheels in polished or chrome, but some thing about the black wheels against the teal paint just looks right.

Any input you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Does Cornfed making spacers for the 4th gen? Just wondering as I thought only Daystar and Revtek were the only ones making spacers. I know Cornfed was going to make spacers but I didn't know he actually did now.

285/75/16 is the way to go. It's recommended to get aftermarket wheels with the size of 16x8, 0 offset and 4.5 backspacing. This is the best combination to making sure you don't rub as much.

Rubbing will be an issue period. Trust me I've been thru this. Expect to trim the front bumper as well as removing the mud flaps if you plan to offroad. Any kind of compression and those will come right off so make sure you remove them prior to taking it on the trails.

I'm currently running 16x8 (American Racing) with 285/75/16 Goodyear MT/R. They're probably one of the best tires I've used and has been recommended by alot of the community in the offroading world. It will cost a pretty penny but it's definitely a great tire.

No need to regear as I'm still running stock gears (no aftermarket gears at the moment and don't expect any for atleast a minimum of 12 - 18 months). My mpg has gone down about 1 mpg on average just on the tires and my speedo is approx 8-9% off (including the tripometer).

You won't brake anything as long as you drive the same way (normal). Even on the trails, this is not a problem.

Lastly, I've been running 285's almost 1 year now and I'm still running like a champ!

Nope, no problem. I was just curious your rationale. I personally find it easier having what your car is in the signature, but understand if you believe that strongly in something, you have the choice to not have people be distracted by what runner you have. And you're right, "free speech is a great" privilege. Sorry, if I came off offensive, that wasn't my intention.

If i were physicaly able, you had better beleive I would be over in Iraq standing beside the brave men and women of our Army ready to lay down my life just as they are. There are no words to describe the respect and love i feel for them. Over on Yotatech there is a lot of guys running 3rd Gen's with pretty big tires 33" seem par for the course so I would say you shouldn't expect any issues. DO a search there for different combo's, also as previously said you will probably have some rubbing.

If your wife will be driving it, I would reconsider the Thornbirds. (Thornturds, Stuckbirds, etc.)

Have you ever owned them or have known someone who did. I have, and no one I know has much good to say about them. They suck in the rain, ice, snow, and they are marginal in the mud. The tread blocks are too big and close together to clean well, and they are not siped. You will be doing donuts everytime it rains. You can groove to make them work better in the mud, but that's about it. Also, most swampers are much heavier than any other manufacturers tire in the same size.

Expect to get about 15,000 miles on them before they are bald, and you might as well remove your stereo, because you won't hear it after about 5000 miles.

I don't mean to pee all over your plans, but I hate to see someone else get stuck with these worthless things. Interco does make some other decent tires though, check out the Truxus MTs, they're a good all-around tire. I run TSL radials on my Jeep (36x13.5), and while they are a bit more aggressive, they are still decent on the road. (I only expect 20,000 to 25,000 out of them, but the Jeep is a weekend toy, so I don't care)

Thornbirds,

While they are some of the sexiest tires out there, suck.

I've ran them twice, don't ask me why, but I did like them the first time on my ford ranger. i later ran them on a heavily modified 86 SAS 4Runner and they suck. That was in Colorado, and they were good for nothing except flat spotting.

If you want to go for looks and performance, check out the new Nitto Grapplers, and there new Mud Tires as well. They look good as hell, last longer than the birds and I've read good reviews on them.

If you hands down want the best tire in my opinion for everyday use, go with the MTR's, or the BFG MT KO's. They both will last your around 30 to 40 thousand miles depending on how often you rotate them, and they handle everything thrown at them.

Every one but a few ive spoke to dislikes the thornbirds. I've got my eye on the Yokoham Geolander M/T now.. they seen pretty popular. Ideas on these ?

The Yok's are great tires, fairly inexpensive, will last a while, have the right strength in the sidewall to allow for airing down for the trail. They also are one of only about 5 mud tires with all kinds of computer research into making the tires quiter. The Bridgestone mud tires, the MTR, the BFG's and only a few others all have the research done on plug placement to make them quite. Due to the research they also last longer on the street. The Yok's are a much better choice than the TBirds..

no traction when side hilling.

i just got some firestone mt's last week,
so far so good.

no mudding yet just rocks & soft dirt.

i stepped down from 305's to 285's because
they didn't have them in stock.

no problems with the 305's,

could of had issues with the power steering if i continued
with the 305's, steering was very tight.
