Have you ever had windshield problems with your Toyota?

My 5 year old T4R Trail apparently had a lousy windshield installation when the truck was built.

Many Many other people have complained about windshields shattering, cracking, rattling and leaking and Toyota refuses to take responsibility, telling their customers that the windshield is "out of warranty".

If you have had any of these issues I ask that you visit this website https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and register a complaint. If we get enough complaints maybe NHTSA will recall these Toyota Windshields and finally take responsibility for their lousy windshields.

My 4runner has 8k miles and the windshield rattles like crazy when I'm on bumpy trails, and continues for a couple days afterwards, but then mysteriously heals itself.

I understand your frustration. I have been here for seven years and the major complaint is cracked windshields from rocks because of its upright position. The second major (at least on this forum) has been a ticking or creaking, usually when it's cold. I don't think anyone ever proved the ticking definitively came from the windshield. While I say it's the second biggest complaint, it's still probably less than 20 people. The 4Runner will sell 120K+ this year. 20 or even 200 is a proverbial drop in the bucket. Good luck man.

Mine is 6 years old, 92k miles -->no issues.
4runner before that (a 3rd gen) 188k miles and 12 years old --> no issues.
4runner before that (a 1st gen) 230k miles, also 12 years old --> no issues.

Of course if it breaks now, I would immediately start a class action lawsuit. :loco:
 
Mine just cracked two days ago from the cold.
I've had to replace the windshield on every suv I've owned, this one is no different.Still think it's a great truck.
 
Grape-sized rock did a number on my windshield during a trip to Yellowstone this summer. Insurance co agreed to replace with Toyota factory glass. Now good as new.

I've had to replace my windshield twice in the last 12mo due to rock strikes. 90% of my driving is highway at 70+mph so I'm susceptible. Still, my previous Honda Pilots did not have this issue so I believe it's due to the upright position. I'm hoping that I've just hit an unlucky streak otherwise I'll just trade it in rather than constantly wondering whether that car or truck in front of me will break it again.

Regarding the ticking in cold weather, funny you should mention this. I too thought it was due to the windshield but after my second replacement the ticking was still there. Never changed after each replacement. In my case it was the passenger side lower corner. After a year of trying to isolate it I finally figured it out. There is a small curved plastic piece of molding on the outside in each lower corner. It snaps in. It always sounded like the noise was where the glass met the frame but what it actually was was the plastic tapping against the glass making it sound like it was at the joint. Friction tape solved the issue. After a year it's finally gone. Simple fix for such an annoying noise.
 
Surprisingly, no. I've been getting peppered with rocks on the freeway on my 2017 for about 6 months now and I only have very small imperfections on my windshield (kind that are only visible in direct sunlight).

Maybe they improved the temper of the glass?

Just experienced this sound on my way home tonight. Truck has 100mi on it... would love to silence this. If you could take any pictures of your fix, I sure would appreciate it.

Nope. Same part numbers. If you change anything part number has to change.

Second 4Runner, no rattles on either. Though I do wish there was a better aftermarket solution for better glass. Unless I’m just not aware of one that exists. Really want a protective film. At 61k miles my glass is ugly. Can’t wait until this winter is over to get a new windshield
