Have you ever had windshield problems with your Toyota?

Mine used to tick a lot in cold weather. It was super annoying - to the point where I brought it up with my dealership multiple times. That lead nowhere. Somewhere along the way it just stopped and now it's fine. No leaks rattles or ticks. Unfortunately she just took a deathblow from a rock down near the heating element which will get much worse when the cold sets in. That said, 80k out of a windshield in Colorado is awesome, so I'm happy to replace it.

No noise issues but having mine replaced due to "sandblasted" effect. No problem with my previous 4th gen even after 270,000 miles. After researching on here requested Pilkington replacement.

Is that a requirement in the auto industry? In the consumer electronics industry, we make pretty significant changes beyond material temper and simply change the revision.

Usually won't change the base part number (say the first six digits for example) but even a revision change will change the end part number (the last two digits for example.) Every manufacturer is different, but if you change a material spec (or temper or formula or anything really) and keep the same part number, you can't track it anymore. So if I have a windshield part number 0012YZ (made up) and would change the temper and keep the same part number, then there were a rash of exploding windshields that were 0012YZ, how would I know that it was the "new" one with the temper or the old one? Even changing revision numbers wouldn't help unless it was date coded. And, even if it were date coded, you couldn't be sure that a new truck didn't get old stock unless you obsoleted or destroyed all old stock! Yep, part number has to change somehow and a supersede note added.

silent revisions (same part numbers) exist, it's not good practice but it happens

the most famous example would obviously be GM not changing the part number on their ignition switch

(i'm not implying it happened in this case, just pointing out that it's a thing that exists)

Mine chipped within a week of buying it brand new right in the middle. I opted to have it filled. I can still see it, but there is no way I was going to tear out the OEM one on a brand new truck.

Rocks hitting the windshield was not part of my problem, but I've read where people tried to get a small chip removed by those guys at the gas stations and ended up with a completely cracked windshield.

The point is the windshield itself is probably not making the noise. It's probably the trim at the bottom shaking enough to make a ticking noise that sounds like the windshield. Good luck and hope you solve it.

After a heavy rain or car wash I get a gurgling sound from around the top of the windshield. Like water is trapped behind the trim. No leaks and it's a 2016 LE.

You know, thinking about your story, leads me to wonder if your original OEM windshield was broken and repaired at port, when it was on or just came off the boat, or the port lot, and obviously before it was shipped to the dealer.

It turned out that Toyota uses two different windshield manufacturers, and the stealership didn't know that. Surprised?:lol:

Second 4Runner, no rattles on either. Though I do wish there was a better aftermarket solution for better glass. Unless I’m just not aware of one that exists. Really want a protective film. At 61k miles my glass is ugly. Can’t wait until this winter is over to get a new windshield

I didn't research Pilkington but see they are a glass company. Maybe they are what you are looking for?

my 17 seems to be holding up pretty well. The upright position does have a lot to do with rock chips. Wrangler's are the absolute worst.
