Head unit install - grounding question

Ok, I'm installing my new head unit and i want to make sure I've got this sucker grounded right. The adapter harness I bought with the unit has a black wire for "chassis ground", as does the harness that came with the unit. As with all the other wires I simply confirmed with the documentation that the colors matched and then spliced them together. I did this for the two black wires as well.

Got the unit installed and it seems to be running fine, but I just want to make sure I did the ground right, cause i know that a bad ground isn't always obvious right away and can take a while before it becomes (sometimes catastrophicaly) obvious.

Also, what is this guy? It was plugged into the stock head unit next to the antenna connector.

That should be the other antenna plug. The 4Runners have a "diversity" antenna with two antennas. The one up front, and the one in the back window. You can get an adapter for that plug and a y cable to plug both antennas into your new stereo, or just leave the one in the back window out and only run the one on the front fender.

What stereo are you installing?

You need to take the two black wires and attach them to some bare metal in the dash frame. I ground off paint and drilled a tiny hole for a screw. The way you did it sounds like you're relying on the truck's wire loom. It works for a while, 'til it doesn't. I had catastrophic tail light failure a couple of weeks after wiring it the way you and any normal person would. Give it it's own dedicated ground. Also the Y plug for the diversity antenna is only $4.99 from Amazon.

You also need a small adaptor plug as shown in this thread:

Thanks guys, I had a feeling, but at the same time didn't know for sure. I'll crack the 'ol girl back open and get that ground reworked.

Thanks for saving my bacon.
