Heat Exchanger under the hood

I've been looking for a small heat exchanger to put in line with the radiator fluid of my 4R. I want to heat up water for general use... like pump it out of a cold stream and heat it for kitchen, shower, hot-tub, etc. The idea being to take heat out of the engine coolant and put it into your stream of clean water. Add a 12VDC pump to the mix and you've got a hot-water spigot.

something ill do eventually, ive replaced my radiator and i have never used the tanny cooler part so its still "untouched". i would like to incorporate that into a hot water heater but as of right now i have no use for it.

I've read about other people doing this with limited success. Still probably worth a try just for a cleaner easier install.

I was going to comment earlier, but didn't want to kill the thrill.

The issue isn't the heat exchanger, but the power practicality. Like your car coolant system, it only works with the engine running and the water pump moving water around.

How exactly do you intend to power the system? You would have several options, all of which would have an immense amount out waste. 1. You have a 20 gallon tank added to your truck, so as you are driving you can be using the heat while driving to your destination heating the water.


I don't think you want to do this one, do you? You want a raw water intake source, like a stream, that seems to suggest a stationary posture. That means you need to be constantly running the vehicle to do this...

You appear to kinda want a ON DEMAND water heater via your car, and I am not sure the efficiency is there. The amount of unnecessarily wasted energy via the engine running would be intense. You are honestly better off looking at a solar shower solution.

Those things work incredibly well and can take freezing cold water, using solar energy, heat it up to a usable warm shower.

I would assume he's planning to use the same Surflo pump that pretty much everyone uses (including water injection kits).

I do agree that having to run the engine to heat the water sucks, but if you are driving all day on a trail, and you decide to stop for the night and want/need to shower the water in the truck is already hot and ready to go. At that point idling the truck for a few more minutes isn't much worse than running a generator.

I like the idea of a solar panel for helping to keep the battery system charged on an expedition intended build, but wouldn't want to rely on it for any system function in full.

I do like the Equipt 100 series set up other than the hose connection. Fully functional and a pretty clean job, just not a huge fan of worm gear clamps, so I would probably end up spending way too much on fancy fittings that aren't needed.

I planned on running the engine to do this. I would move the water with a little 12VDC pump. Getting water uphill is the biggest challenge, and the pump would have to be submersed to keep it primed, which means some long wires. Another option is filling up something like an inflatable raft with water and circulating the raft water through the heat exchanger to make a little hot tub. Add some cold brews and you've got a party under the stars!
