Hella Supertone wiring

I got some Supertones to replace my stock horns. The box had a relay in it and nothing else, and there's a random diagram on the box without written instructions. I've seen a few different wiring diagrams online. What I'm wondering is why I can't just hook the existing horn wire (of which the tab slides directly on the Hella part) and make my own ground wire screwed to the chassis right next to it.

Is the relay needed for some reason?

That's exactly what I did with my supertones wiring, and I didnt use the relay either.

ok so maybe the relay is for installing on a separate circuit as if you were to keep your stock horns as well..? Sounds good, thanks

the stock horn only had one wire, making me think the mounting hardware was somehow the grounding lug, so I'm going to put a ring terminal around the bolt as I screw it back onto the chassis.

My Supertones came with diagrams showing how to wire the horns if used for emergency vehicles. That's were the relay is needed.

You can also use the relay to increase the current applied to horn by using the stock wiring as a signal switch to the relay and using bigger wires from the battery to power the horns. this is similar to the wiring to improve headlight output

Will it not be the full 118 dB if you don't use the relay?

i didn't take measurements but there was a significant increase in the output level after rewiring vs using the stock wiring.
