Help! Axle at shop, need retainer measurement from spline!

The problem with my (original) axle is that the polished/unpolished boundary/line is not straight. I brought a print out of the FSM page where it shows the 122mm measurement from the face of the axle hub on page SA-84 of the FSM but the independent shop that is pressing my parts does the measurement from the spline.

Does anyone happen to have the measurement from the spline side? Or do I just tell them to put the retainer in the Toyota specified location but flipped?

Is the original position at 5mm polished showing?

Will do the grease/sharpie test but wanted to make sure it will not grind against the housing at the original spec'd location flipped.

This is on a 2K Sports with e-lock, I don't think that matters but just in case it does.

Thanks in advance!

Tim's video says 5 mm, but all depends on the sharpie test. May be ask them to press like 4 mm and do the sharpie test, then decide. Hopefully Tim or someone will reply to you soon.

Thanks for the reply. So I ended up having them press the flipped retainer on the factory location, I measured the polished showing when I got home and it was 3.52 - 3.80mm. Like I said mine was not uniform around the axle. I know Tim has done like 11 of these and he says 5mm and I don't doubt him, but for my case 5mm would have been too much as I did the sharpie test and it was smack in the middle of the retainer 9mm/2=4.5mm! I remember seeing someone else saying 5mm was too much for him too and he moved it to about 3mm showing.

Weird thing is that new OEM toyota bearing had a lot of play. I guess my old bearings were not that bad, I previously thought it had a lot of play.

BTW, I measured the distance to the end of the spindle and its 622mm.

I also measured the distance around the seal to the end of the axle housing to make sure it was seated flat and evenly, I ended up with 39.1mm as far as I remember. What was important in case your measurement tool was not accurate (I had two calipers to compare, one MIJ the other MIC) is that the measurements are even all around and bonus was it was the same on both sides. I used the race seal loaner tool (that's right no need to purchase one) for O'rlys though I purchased the plastic one from HFT which is actually a better fit (the seal OD is 70mm) but too flimsy. The OTC set or any of the aluminum sets would have a 2.83" =72mm which you can start with and finish off with the 2.555".

So again for my 2K sports with e-locker, polished showing was only between 3.52-3.80mm and the sharpie test says the seal is smack in the middle!

That's on one axle, I only had them do one. I will post the measurements when I get the other axle tomorrow.

Been too long so I’ve forgot but one or two brands of the bearings are snug while the others seem to be lose out of the box.
Forget what’s what, Nichi, Koyo, or NSK.

Not that it matters at this point. I’ve not heard of folks having issues with any of them.

The Toyota OEM bearing I have is KOYO. So I guess try Nichi or NSK next time.
