HELP! Broke down outside Joplin MO

Driving along just fine, and then nothing. Had no power, and then had power again. Runner was sputtering and shaking, and then fine. Stopped and checked the oil, couldn't get any real reading. We add some more oil and it started back up. Drove it 100 yards and it started shaking again. I have no idea here.

Did you get any CEL's? Any other indication of something wrong?

When you say no power, will it start, but sputter shake when you try to drive?
If so, did you just get gas. Might be bad gas...

What about coolant level? How about oil-is it just oil in there??
 
No dash lights came on. It'll start just fine, driveable for a bit, and it shakes and sputters. Feels like it loses all power, then it comes back. I have coolant, not the most full, but its visable is the bottle. Definately oil, nothing milky looking. We had an oil change, and im not totally convinced they put oil in.

could it be a bad alt then ran on the batt and used up all the power? sorry boss im in moberly right now, not even close to you. pm if u want my number to call me for faster talking...
 
check all connections, battery, spark plug wires, etc... my dad had a problem like this once on his suburban and it was a loose spark plug wire.
 
Cars starts and runs at idle just fine though. Would it shut itself off if the idiots didn't put- and stop. Car just died sitting at idle. No lights came in, nothing dimmed out, just lowering rpms, and then I turned it off.

you're a little too far down the road from [MENTION=76182]Kung[/MENTION] near Ft Leonard Wood, and he also just sold his 4Runner anyway...
 
No there isnt any kind of safe mode in tbe ecu, so like he said, if there isnt any oil on the dipstick, stop turning it on, youll fry the motor if you keep it up.
 
Once you get the oil issue resolved, I'm thinking it's possibly a fuel issue, but I'm no mechanic. You've got spark, since it's starts and idles. Sounds like it gets starved for fuel.

yes this more information helps. so its not low on oil so we can eliminate the problems that come with that. it start and idols fine but will then just shut off.

could you simply be out of gas or maybe a fuel pump like someone else said it could be starving for fuel.
 
Alright, the nice people at the RV park gave us about 2 gallons of gas. Runner is running to the gas station now with no issues. Just put it 17 gallons here, plus the 2 at the rv park. I thinking we were running on fumes. Looks like we have a faulty fuel guage. We'll keep you posted.

Call me if you need to and let me know what is going on and if you need me to come and get you. Are you alone? You need me to bring anything? I have a tow truck at disposal also if we need to go that route.

Looks like he is up and running. Faulty gas gauge seems to be the issue at this point. They are heading to Utah.

Things are going good. Seems to be the fuel guage, no clue why. Guage said we had 1/4, but were really sucking on fumes. We got 2 gallons from the rv park, and then 17 gallons at the gas station. Now we're driving through freezing rain in OK.
