Help me out 265's or 285's.. any regrets? ASAP

i would have suggested kumho road venture sat kl 61's

look like pretty sweet tires, quite a bit less agressive than duratracs, so prob a lot better mileage. Overall I'm pretty happy with the goodyears, but it would be sweet if you could 'test drive' tires, I'd like to see how the kumho's would do in mud.

it'd be awesome to try the tires before you buy for sure.

from the reviews i've seen around online and the tire survey off tirerack they seem to get pretty good reviews.

also, at pretty much half the price of duratracs they're quite tempting. especially since they have the mountain/snowflake on the tire.

I was quoted $997. For the 265's or $1013 for the 285's. Discount your the best.

I went with a 265 Duratrac E and I drive a lot on the highway and about 20% or less on gravel, dirt, and muddy roads. I'm a geologist and some places we have to go are way out in the boonies. We have plenty of ice and snow up here in Canada too. I really like them and the reason I went 265 was because they fit the stock 17" without any issue or modification. Anything looks better than the stock tire and I think someone would be hard pressed to "regret" going for a 265. If you actually NEED wider tires, get something worthwhile like a 305. Just don't be one of those goofballs with a decked out truck and be scared when it is dirty and is strictly a pavement princess.

Can someone post a picture of a 265 vs. a 285 of the same tire? Or OP could do it themself and share it with us since we've already bought our tires

Nachies, this is OT, but how do you like your 3K HID fogs? Noticeable difference in fog/blizzards?

I loves my 3k in the snow, there's a big difference over stock. Plus I love the blue-ish yellow the HID's cast out to the side of the vehicle.

As for the tires..I did find that I am having some rubbing issues. But I am not sure exactly where its coming from. One side of the truck I modified the front liner by taking a heat gun to the liner. I stopped because at that point I decided I was going with 265's. But then Discount tire talk me out of the 265's by dropping the prices by $300 dollars. So now...I am hoping my issue is the other front liner and not the rears of the liner. I did promised my wife I wouldn't spend another dollar on the rig for awhile. I guess I'll find out this morning.

It was pretty funny at Discount tire last night. I kept saying to myself that 285's couldn't possibly change the look of the 4runner that much. We're talking .5" in size with width and height. No possible way.

With the shop full of employees and customers. Much to my amazement, I was proved wrong..
As soon as they started to mount the 285's on all 4Runner, all the employees took out there phones and started taking pictures. The customers all started to ask me questions and gave me comment.

But as soon as I got home, (expect to get yelled at) the wife states; I don't see anything different". Then walks away. I am lost??

I order a Craven Stubby antenna if there was going to be an issue.
But I actually pull in just fine. The Seal of the garage just touches the antenna.

I had 285's and went back to 265's

I had 265's and went to a 285 and lost substantial MPG. I also felt my T4R was under powered off road with the over-sized 285 tires. I know went back to 265's in a BFG All Terrain TA/KO's that is as aggressive as I can get without making road noise, but is still aggressive.

I recommend doing as I did and buying a 2nd set of rims for a dedicated set of off-road tires.

This is exactly what I am going to do on my next 4runner. Keep the stock tires and wheels and have another set of off road tires for off road season. I get tired of the power lose, mpg hit and tire noise. Was cool at first but gets old after a couple years. When you first put on the big tires you are so excited about it you forgive the downside and just think about how cool it looks. You do not realize the difference until you drive another stock tire 4runner, then it is like where did all this quietness and power come from.

Is this on a 5th gen 4Runner? Cause on a 1998 that's kinda given considering all things.

Discount sold me the D's. It does drive and handle different.. But I knew that going in to it. After driving about 100 miles, the first thing i noticed was the response and the feeling. At first i thought my alignment was off. But the tires track strieght. So its has to be the diameter/width of the tires, catching the groves and imperfections in the road. I am use to running super swampers, so these handle 100 times better tho. As for noise, its really mild.

There might be a change in MPG, but I haven't noticed it yet. The computer still reads 19-21 mpg. As for a loss in power, I haven't noticed it that much. But I have been wheeling for years with vechiles with sticks. Up sizing a vehicle with a stick and high gears like 3.07's, you'll loss your over drive or 5th gear. From what I have read the 4runner is stock with 3.73's, which is good with 33" tires. 4.10's would be best unless your crawling.

So far I am happy going with the 285's. As fir swapping tires back and forth. I have been this route. Its not fun and worth my time. Its way I went with a great all around tire.

From my experience with several off road tires they get noisier as they wear. They start out fairly quiet then gradually increase in volume. I never had Duratracs though.

Interesting, thanks for the response. What brand/kit did you go with? If you have a moment, could you post photos of them in the dark? Curious about output, cutoff and how they compliment to the stock headlights (if they're still stock).
