help - weather stripping

ok so one of the disadvantages of living in az is it drys EVERYTHING out. well, my weather stripping on the outside of the driver window has cracked and seperated. :violin:

so my question is, should i just glue it back together? silicone glue? regular adhesive?

or is it easier to just replace the whole thing? if so how do i? do i have to take off the mirror?

any opinions are highly appreciated

Boy, I'm not sure on that. You might take a little silicon sealant or some sort of gasket sealer and put a small bead on it, that stinks man.

Just so happens I had to replace those strips too. You would think that Toyota would call them "weatherstriping", but they are actually called "belts" or "window belt moldings".

I had Desert Toyota in Tucson replace mine shortly after I bought my 04. Didn't see them damaged when I bought the vehicle, so I had to replace them on my dime.

Here's some part numbers for you:

68162-35060 Weatherstrip, FR
68161-35060 Weatherstrip, FR

68164-35030 Weatherstrip, RR
68163-35030 Weatherstrip, RR

At least that's what my ticket says. Unit price on each were 28.59 on 07/09/09. Probably more now. You can probably find them cheaper online. At the time of purchase, Conicelli Conicelli Parts Center had them for $13.58. You can find them under the "Front Door" > "Interior Trim" > "Belt/w Strip". Conicelli shows the front and rear; the left and right sides are the same, although Toyota has separate part numbers for them. Same goes for the rear passengers.

Probably can do them yourself. All the mechanic did was cut the back on them in the middle and pulled them off. Desert Toyota did all four for 1 hour labor ($100). AFAIK, they just slip over and lock into place, although I'm not entirely positive. I replaced the tailgate window belt myself. Piece of cake, took me more time to get the weatherstriping back into place then to replace the belt. That belt just slipped over and locked into the sheet metal; it looks like the front may do the same.

Yep, I don't what's worse down here; the sun or the heat!

I wouldn't bother trying silicone adhesive; just replace the belt.

Edit: I wanted to clarify something. I replaced the tailgate belt along with the weatherstriping because I had a bad seal. The weatherstriping does not need to be replaced when replacing the belt. The belt is easily pulled off and replaced without playing with the weatherstriping.

I recently replaced all of mine too - I actually purchased the parts from a dealership but I got all four doors with one of the 20% off coupons that the Toyota Dealerships send out monthly then just paid for the labor to install them, of course I actually forgot to check the rear window and ended up having to replace that after the fact which was a bummer - I ran in to the problem that there wasn't a replacement for some of the parts in state and they had to be ordered.

If you do it yourself, don't try to pry on them from the outside as they lock into a groove or channel on the inside. Roll down the window and pry them up from the inside. Once you get it started on an edge, you should be able to just pulled them off. I can see why the mechanic cut them on the inside as it facilitated removing the belt easier.

yeah ive been reading into it all day. i plan on just taking off the door panel and mirror and going slow with it. its just hard to find the right part right now. im not 100% sure about the conicelli ones cause its under interior trim. isnt it exterior? and the illustration option doesnt really show me much. but i cant seem to find the right part anywhere. i might go to the dealer tomorrow and see what the parts called, and how much they charge for it.

is the part from conicelli for sure what i need?

The parts I've listed are the parts for the vehicle at the time I did mine. Only Toyota knows why they have listed it as an interior part instead of exterior.

AFAIK, there is no reason to take off the door panel or mirror.

Go to Desert or Precision Toyota. I personally get better service from Desert Toyota. It's aother story in itself, but I will not buy a vehicle or have service performed at Precision (but I have found that Desert Toyota cranks up the price over MSRP whereas Precision doesn't.) Also you might talk to one of the service advisor to get a price for replacement.

The way I've always played the game with the dealerships is I get a parts list from them and then I go get the best price. I have bought many things from Conicelli and they are one of the best. In fact I believe they are one of the sponsors on the T4R forum. Desert Toyota won't match me for price, but the service dept does not have any problems if I bring in Toyota parts and have them perform the work. I have a specific person I work with in servicing my vehicle; out of respect for him, I won't put his name on the net without his ok.

I just priced everything at Conicelli by running all the part numbers I gave you.

Every strip at Conicelli was $18.31 MSRP; their price to you is $13.73. It came to grand total of $54.92, ground shipping $7.50 (no tax to us either!). So their price is $62.42 shipped.

Go to Desert Toyota and get their part numbers, price, and a printout of the part. They are real good on helping you there.

On my first post I posted what I paid for them ($28.59) I bought my parts from them and had them install them. My price for 4 belts was $114.36 and labor was $100.00. My bill was $234.43.

I was lazy that day and paid the price.

ok so sorry about being such a dumb@ss about this but i want to make sure i understand what your saying. i thought when you said go form the inside out that meant from the inner side of the door, meaning take off the door panel? but i guess not. so i illustrated what my second guess is. i would love to not have to take my door or mirror off but i wanna do it right.

so 1 is where i place the flathead screw driver/prying tool and 2 is the direction i move it?

I think you should have a mechanic do the work.

But you can save yourself some money if you are going to replace all four and buy the parts yourself, and let Desert Toyota do the replacement.

I do not have the service manual for the vehicle, perhaps someone else on the forum has it? who can help you replace the part if you are so inclined to do it yourself.

I personally would let the dealership replace the part. They screw up the vehicle, they get to fix it.

went to the dealership today (desert toyota of tucson), and they said 32.41 for the part (for 1) and they said since all they would do it pull it out, by prying it with a screw driver and snap the new one in they would do it for free, they also told me step by step how to do it myself. and they gave me the part number. i might buy it from them even tho its pricey just for their service. they were awesome.

Ditto, if you are only replacing one. I'ld probably go for the deal too.

Desert Toyota pricing sucks though for 1 belt (unless the prices have changed recently) or (if they are including the price of the belt and replacement.)

It sounds like you should look into the rear seal too.

yeah the driver side door is the only one that is cracked and broken. all the others are fine. doesnt even look like theyll need it any time soon. i might look into the rear more but it looks fine at first glance last night.
im thinkin the driver is the only one cause i constantly drive with my window down and my arm out the window. and im usually the only one in my car so that one is the one that is used the most.

My service advisor and I were talking about this. In all my years of owning various vehicles, I've never had to replace weatherstriping and I've owned vehicles older than this one. Only on this 4Runner, have I ever had to replace the window striping. The heat and sun of AZ sure is harsh on rubber parts. My driver's side was ripped and the front passenger was going, the rear passenger were worn a little but seemed ok, but I decided to do all four.

My tailgate belt had a small tear in it. I was a little overly agressive one day at the car wash and ripped it further ....!

The part number for the tailgate belt is 68290-35031. Price at Conicelli when I bought on 9/8/10 was $23.18, my price was $17.15.

The rear is a piece of cake, easier then the side.
