Sadly - I had to replace all 5 of them... not sure how every single one of them went that bad in 5 years - my 4R hasn't even been in AZ that long.

I also think it's the movement of the strip. Next time you are rolling the window up and down, notice the movement of the strip. Seems a little excessive to me; it probably contributes to the wear and tear a lot, and the AZ heat and sun just rots them off the vehicle. I've also been noticing that where they crease, it tends to build up with dirt and such.

Hello all, first post. I wanted to weigh in on this old thread. I just bought a 2005 4runner in great shape except for the outside weatherstripping, especially on the driver side. Being an AZ truck, the sun had rotted it and it was pretty badly torn. I perused the good info on this forum and others on how to replace it and got a copy of ALLDATA repair for this procedure from my mechanic. It recommended removing the door panel, which is a daunting procedure. The local toy dealer wanted $35 per window for labor alone and Dan's Toy shop wanted $50/door! I had ordered all 5 bands from Conicelli for about 100 and took a deep breath and tried to replace the drivers one w/o removing the door panel. Wow, was it easy- took about 5 minutes. This is what I did: Remove screw inside that holds the back of the weatherstrip, grab ahold of the weatherstrip and pull it away from the door. From the outside take a screwdriver with electrical tape on it and unhook the leading edge of the strip. Mine was so rotted that it split in two, making it easier. Once you get it started, it pulls out easily. To put new one in, slide front edge under mirror, about 1/2 inch and snap it back in and replace screw. Sorry no pics, but it really is easy. With 172,000 miles, the weatherstripping was really the only thing wrong with the truck. 4runners really are amazing vehicles. Hope this helps. Will

The key to completing this repair on my 2004 4Runner was noticing that the weather strip is held in place by a Torx screw on the inside of the door. The screw grips the weather strip at the rear of each front door, and at the front of each rear door.
When you have removed the Torx screw, it's easy to remove the weather strip from the door by pulling the weather strip upwards. There's no need to break the weather strip in any way in order to remove it. To install the new weather strip, you push downwards on it until it clicks into place, then install the screw.
The Torx driver you will need to remove/replace the screw is a Torx T20.

Yes it is that easy as Backlitcoyote says. Unscrew the torx and stripping pulls right out. I had to lift the edge (torx screw side) a bit and put a flat head screw driver in the molding to pop it out of the groove. Then it easily pulls right out.

Very helpful. I replaced the strip on both front doors and on the back lift gate window, bought them from http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=840.

If you need an adhesive for weatherstripping, I would recommend a 3M AUTO Advanced product (03602) called Black Superstrength Weatherstrip Adhesive. It comes in a 1 ounce tube for about $4 at auto parts stores and major retailers. I used it to re-glue the thin black weatherstripping around the headlights on my 04 4Runner. It adheres and holds very well, and it's water resistant.

Have the same problem on my 5th gen runner, couldn't find the info but does anyone have the part numbers for the outside weather stripping of the rear doors not the cargo door. Same as this scenario might be good to know all 4 numbers.

Yup, I just replaced my drivers side today for my 2007 limited.. Remove the screw on the inside of the door, and then it pops out (clickity-click). Then slide the new one into the mirror side first, and press firmly all the way down to the side where the screw is. Click click click, it pops into place when you put pressure on it. There was no gasket sealer or any other adhesive, so I don't see why you would want to add any. It took all of 5 minutes.

I just ordered weather stripping for all 4 windows from Conicelli. Dealer wanted $32 for front windows and $65 for rear windows, and that doesn't even include labor! Each online part was $17, plus $17 shipping. I figured there was a thread on here that I could learn from... I'll be doing this myself thanks to this thread. As always, the advice, part numbers, and other guidance is greatly appreciated!

I just finished this job on my '03 4Runner. Interestingly, the service manual for the '03 lists a ton of inner door disassembly that simply isn't necessary. Basically, just remove the small screw at the inside back edge of the front door and the inside front edge of the back door that secures the weather stripping to the door. These are torx screws and you should start by removing them and then removing the weather stripping where these screws were located since they will now be loose. Other than that it was a very easy job. Oh, and the rear hatch weather stripping does not have any screws.

Yes! Thank you for your response. I did do this already however, getting the actual old stripping out is difficult because it has a clip that i can't seem to get loose. Would it hurt just to break the whole thing and take it out? I have the replacement and believe that once I can get that old piece out, exchanging it for the new one would be easy
