Help with cv axle 5th gen

About 4,000 miles ago I had some new wheels slightly more aggressive offset, and some 285's mounted. Also light racing UCA' s were installed. About 3 weeks ago I started getting a loud pop when in reverse and the wheels turned hard right. Tonight I got under there looking around and I grabbed the cv axle, and it has play in it. I can move it towards the diff and towards the wheel a little. The driver side does not do this. I jacked up the front end to check for bad bearing by shaking the tire and got no play. So anyone know for sure what I could be looking at here? Total miles on the vehicle is 24,000. Also there are no leaks on either end of axle that I can see. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The cv suppose to move in and out (inside itself so to speak) not in and out of the diff. Jack up the front again and try to spin your wheels if there is a lot of resistance or popping sound coming from cv, your suspension might be cranked up to high or you need to instal limit straps

Thanks I do have some resistance spinning the tire. I have never heard of limit straps? I have had the lift on for a year and for some reason it just started after wheels and uca install. U think the joints may be going out?

Hard to say, one thing you could do is go to auto parts store pick up a spare cv (with life time warranty ) and replace it to see if it'll fix the problem. CV replacement only takes about 30 min.

Had oil changed at dealer today, tech checked it out. Gonna replace it under warranty. I was surprised since it is lifted with larger tires and aftermarket wheels.

The dealer just replaced it and pulling in my drive way it made the same noise! Got under there and u can make it just like the one they said was bad? The driver side is tight. It's getting very frustrating.

5th gen? 285s? Tight turn? Offset wheels? Is the tire rubbing or hitting the mudflap or moulding?

Also check the LR UCA bushings. They were having premature failure issues and warrantied mine.

You can search for more or contact them directly.

You did not mention the brand of lift. Do you have KDSS or normal swaybar?

I developed a clearance issue between my coilover and the sway bar even with the new sway bar alignment brackets.

3 in spacer lift from ready lift. Have already trimmed fender and removed mud flap. It's loud pop, it isn't rubbing anywhere. LR uca' s only been on couple thousand miles. It is a 5th gen with 285 and 17x8 wheels with 0 offset. I have a lot of play in the cv axle they just replaced yesterday. Seems very loose where it goes into the front diff still. It's an sr5 so no kdss.

If the 'pop' is loud have someone drive it in reverse to recreate the sound while you carefully follow the front bumper (assuming it happens at low speed). You should be able to roughly tell where the pop is coming from (i.e. diff vs bushings/suspension). My first 'guess' would be a bushing, next would be a binding issue. Good luck.

Alright thanks for all the help guys I really appreciate it. I'll see what I can figure out once I find someone to maneuver it while I keep an eye on it

Well went back to dealer to ask them about the popping when pulling in and out of driveway with wheels turned hard right. They said it was my skid plate was loose and moving around on the right side. I was very skeptical of this, and figured they were shooting me a line of crap. Well since yesterday I haven't heard the pop any, and I've tried very hard in the driveway. So I don't have a clue lol. Maybe that's what it really was? Hopefully anyway. Thanks for all the replies guys I really appreciate the help.

ahhh i was hoping nobody beat me to it lol i was thinking its the tire grabbing the front fender at the bottom outer piece.. mine did that until i trimmed enough off

Has anyone with a 2016 Trail with KDSS had this issue? Last night, I was going over a large speed hump/table entering a traffic circle in a shopping center near my home, and something stated clicking/knocking/popping. My car has a whopping 7000 miles on it, a 2"/1" cornfed leveling kit from Burtman Industries. Nothing is loose, not my wheel spacers, the noise happens but only seems to happen after the car has warmed up a bit. It also seems to happen when I turn quickly to the left, but it seems to happen more often when going over bumps...so I'm guessing it might be suspension? Anyone have any ideas?

I just put Icon tubular control arms, Bilstein 5100s on OME 2885s and the Toytec Diff Spacer. I had the alignment corrected, but now I have a slight "clunk" under low speeds during braking and idle rolling. It doesn't do it in the morning when it is cool outside. It only seems to manifest in the afternoons when it is warm. It feels rotational, and I know the tires aren't catching on anything. Is this similar to your issue?
