Hey guys - I'm curious to know why you guys own guns.

I've owned at last one gun since I was 12 years old. My dad bought it for me and we hunted alot. Nowadays, I hunt mainly with my recurve or longbow. My guns are there in the safe ready for whatever. I keep one alot closer to me most of the time.:biggrin2:
The last thing I wanna do is shoot someone. Not even some A-Hole breakin in my house, but I'm not turnin all bleading heart on him if he does try:flipoff:

I agree with Brutus. I would rather give some punk kid my money than take a life. I have had guns pulled on me when i was growing up in a tough neighborhood and have been jumped. IF i was carrying in thjose situations, i may have used it, but i am still here today and only had to take a few lumps.
Working in the streets of Oakland and Richmond i learned to carry a city wallet with an old ID (not current address) no ccards and $40 cash. If you get robbed at gunpoint give them your "city" wallet and they will just take off. If you try to be a hero you will get in trouble.
I have trained martial arts since i was a kid and have been training Krav Maga the last few years now. If someone genuinely threatens me or my family i would rather handle the situation physically than with a firearm. And personally i think that is more fun anyway.
However i would not bring a knife to a gun fight.

Been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for the past few years. Would also like to study Krav Maga if it was offered anywhere near. Great to know a martial art but I will rely on a .45 or .357 to protect my family and personal property.
For years I have had a few decals on the sidelights of our front door:
"Anyone found here at night will be found here in the morning"
"There is nothing in here worth your life"
"Forget the dog, beware of owner"
Guns are fun. I don't hunt, (not that I have anything against it. I just have other fun stuff that's higher on my list than hunting) I just like to shoot. Going to an outdoor range or a place with enough space to set up a range, especially one you have to put it in 4lo to get to is fun. Don't listen to all the bullshit accusations about macho, they are still fun to shoot. I'm just glad I'm allowed to buy 'em.

So do you carry at the GYM? Problem is you never know when or where that kinda stuff will happen. I would prefer to know how to disarm someone with my hands than have to worry about carrying everywhere.

Most importantly to protect my family..many threats out there today and although I don't live in a CC state :der: I'd rather have one (or ten) if I need them rather than need one and not have it.

1. Philosophy: I am a DOD employee. My father and all of my uncles were 82 Airborne Soldiers or Marines. Weapons were as much a part of our family as our pets.
2. Culture: I, along with many others, was initially trained by the Cub/Boy Scouts of America in VA on how to fire a rifle during summer camps prior to becoming a teenager.
3. Hobby: I am an active member of two military gun clubs where instruction, timed range gun shoots, comradery, and fellowship are par for the course.
4. Self/Home Defense: I reside in a metro area and work in a military setting. Crime rates are much higher in metro areas compared to rural or country localities. 911 is best used to report fires, not necessarily heinous crimes within a home. Forewarned is forearmed!
4. Having earned a Master’s Degree from VPI & SU, I would feel much safer on campus if I was allowed to protect myself with a firearm with the knowledge that someone may have lethally bad intentions towards other students. Of course hindsight is always 20/20.
5. Sport: Some universities offer scholarships to students who are proficient with firearms. Some of those students go on to compete in the Olympics.
6. Humor but Truth: BB Guns are not effective deterrents to criminals, vicious animals, or powerful enough to contact steel plates on long gun ranges.
There are many reasons why I own and use firearms. All of which were purchased through a licensed FFL dealers and used in accordance with the local, state, and federal regulations. Must I mention that it is a 2nd Amendment right? Apparently so.

my work takes me to remote and very remote locations. there is no help available nearby, ergo, i carry what i need.
ever had a large black bear interested in you? how about a small pack of dog/wolf hybrids that were former pets (meaning: used to humans) and are now roaming about? don't even get started on boar. they'll be happy to sample you if you are down.
it was a better choice than the giant wrench the would-be assailant chose, and i'm still here.

As a retired law enforcement officer, I can legally carry concealed in any state. To do that, you have to qualify annually. Don't want any old guys who can't shoot straight carrying guns, unless they're not retired LEOs and subject to that rule! I am subject to the same restrictions as every other permit holder when it comes to schools or private establishments that don't allow firearms. But if the school has a "gun free zone" sign posted, that would keep any potential crazy guy shooter from going inside. That whole Adam Lanza thing would not have happened if he knew the school was a gun free zone. :twitch:
I am also a fanatic about safety and keeping firearms secured. It should be a crime in every state if someone gets your unsecured weapon and uses it. Like if your 4 year old found it in the car seat and shot you (Florida).

But really, my first gun was a .45 I got it and carried it on S&R trips after coming across some bear scat one day. Yeah I know some might say it wouldn't stop a bear, but really at a close enough range "it will" and I'm not talking grislys
Then after that, it became a sickness, started collecting the dam things!!
I pray to God that I never have to fire a shot toward anyone! But rest assured if ever I'm put in a situation that requires immediate action, I would hope I would be able to dispatch the threat without too many casualties.
