Hi Lift jack usage

While I would completely agree that the Hi-Lift is likely the most dangerous tool in your bag, I would contend that it is also one of the most versatile. While many functions can be replaced with specialized peices of equipment, you will be hard pressed to find a single tool that will do it all like a farm jack.

I agree that farm jacks are very versatile and can be useful in many different off-road situations, I just wanted to make sure that people are aware that there are many "gotchas" associated with these kinds of jacks. Personally, I don't drag mine on trips since we usually have multiple winches and several other high-lifts.

The OEM jack goes much higher than I ever expected. I will use that even if it means stacking on a rock before I'll use my hi lift. The hi lift is a great tool, but surely a dangerous one, even when used properly.

ive had mine fall. scary as hell. at least i was out of the way. i just let it fall, thank goodness all my tires were on and torqued. i NEVER use the Hi-Lift unless it is necessary. the pipe on the jack, that's another story. best breaker bar ive ever used.

We had an FJ 40 fall off a hi lift one year out at the Lone star Jamboree. Luckily the truck was up against a tree already so it didn't roll down the hill (transfer case was in N at the time because we had to re-attach the linkage)... that one could have been bad. I've also suffered the infamous "widow-maker" when I got careless a few years ago... almost broke my jaw... right after that I figured out just about how far I can throw it when I'm pissed off... which wasn't very far. :lmao:

It saved my butt once when I was out with my Jeep, but as I have traded that in as of yesterday now I have a jack that isn't doing me much good until I get some rock sliders on.

Got stuck in some deep snow and was able to jack up by each wheel and shove rocks, branches, etc... under each tire to back right out.

They can be scary as hell if you aren't careful.
