Hide a key options?

Ive always had a hide a key in a magnetic box just to give me access to the vehicle should i need it and my fob not be handy and i need my sunglasses for example. Is it possible with the new vehicles? In my case, i have the limited 2015 (not even 1000 miles yet).

Can home depot make a copy of my timy fob key that will open door but no start engine? Talking about a 2$ key just to unlock the door. Or, is the key to unique and or such a key would set off the alarm if i used it? As noted below, i may use the small fob key as my hide a key, i always have one and intend to have one on the limited.

I have never liked those. Just too easy for thieves. Would insurance cover you if they found out it had a hide a key?

That's where mine is and I put $$$ in the box too. They will get paid for taking it.
I thought about using a door key only and hiding a real key inside but decided that was too much hassle.

Too many magnetic hide a key boxes fall off for me. I just wire a key under the vehicle. The location is up to you. Your not going to be able to just reach under and find mine.

so you realize that you can't just leave it exposed to weather? right--- if it get wet your are done.
the extra key for the limited cost me 400 at the dealer.
I took the metal key out of the fob an hid that on the outside of the car. took the rest of the fob and hide it inside the car, but you need to take the battery out of the fob or it will be viewed as active to the car.

So if I lose my primary key, I use the metal key to unlock the door, get the fob that is hidden in the car and then put the battery into the fob so that I can start the car

I used to carry a spare key in my wallet, just to get me in. (carried that sucker around for years for my tacoma and never needed it)Then i could use the key I accidentally locked inside which is about the only reason I'd need a spare key. Had a spare key made for my 4R but it is too huge to comfortably fit the wallet. Don't know why they have to be so big. Thought about cutting it down, but said F it. I just risk it these days. I'm not someone who loses their keys and triple A could work in a pinch.

This was pretty helpful. I think it answered my biggest question which is, how to get a spare key to allow access. Just take it out ofmthe fob, i also assume this will allow me to not only open the doors but start the motor. My primary goal was to have home depot make a key that would open the door but not start it since i would not have a chipped key but this may solve both. If i dont use my fob key, is it even possible for home depot to make a key that opens the door?

Took it back to the dealer and they cut it. It only opens the door.
You probably have one somewhere!

Yes. I had a key cut at home depot for my 2014 silverado work truck. It does not have the chip in it. Just the cheapo metal key in a box under the vehicle. It opens the door, glove box, etc but will not start the truck.

All i wanted was to be able to get into the truck if i locked my keys inside. That solved the problem. I can get in easy and did not have to spend $$$ on a backup key.

On my 4runenr I use the valet key in the box.

Hide a key

Yes Home Depot can copy a "mechanical" key for you. That is if they have the key in the first place.

Just go to a locksmith and have them copy a key for you, it's cheap!!
Tell them you want just a "mechanical" key! All that means is they will scratch the cuts on a blank metal key that does not have the rfi chip in it. Thus you can open your truck but it won't start. Personally I think it's a great idea because if a thief wants in they will break glass, but if they find the key it's even better, let's face it if they want in they will get in so might as well make it easy for them so it won't cost you an arm and leg to get new windows.

For people with older trucks you can do the same thing, the cuts that work the lock for the door are different then the cuts that work the ignition!
Exp: door, cuts 2,4,6 work the door lock
Ign., cuts 2,3,5,7 work the ignition
So what you do is have the locksmith only cut 2,4,6 on the key, so you can unlock the doors!

Then you hide a key or (fob) in your truck that will unlock the ignition and has the rfi chip in it to deactivate the computer lock.
