Hitchgate™ tire carrier

My mistake, I didn't realize I was in the 4th gen forum. I'm still a little unsure about moving the tire around, adding weight and complexity, for no additional clearance. Is it just for looks? At least with a rear swingout bumper, the angle of departure is usually increased by removing bodywork and relocating the hitch (plus you get "trail armor" for scraping on rocks worry free). Then the spare actually does become the limiting factor.

And typically, when guys are running tires larger than the stock spare location can fit, they're also re-gearing, throwing lots of extra money at it, etc. At which point they're outgrowing the stock bumpers and getting a swingout anyway. That's why I'm wondering who exactly this is for, and why.
Fitting a 32" tire in our stock location is a tight fit. You also completely lose the ability to use the hitch. So those are two reasons. For me, another reason was that the stock location for the spare sucks in the desert. If you get a flat, it's really a pain in the ass to get under there. I've also added a dual jerry-can carrier to mine, so it's a way to carry extra fuel and water on longer trips.

Here's my classic tiregate. Probably most similar to the offset that they offer now. Mine is the same as YetiX I think.

Very similar to mine, except my tire is dead center. I wish mine was offset like yours, I would have more visibility I think.

Here are some pics of mine. HOWEVER, I have had mods done to mine. I had him bring the tire in slightly and angle it. I also had a 5lb propane tank holder added along with a bar that allows me to hold my Treds and Krazy Beaver shovels (2nd pic). I love it and haven't had any issues going offroad with it. I'm not a super rock crawler so I'm not too concerned with aggressive departure angles. Plus...I can I keep my stock tow rating which is nice. I will add, the thing does NOT wobble at all. It's a pretty damn cool design. The 3rd pic was it off the shelf (Mojave Rd.)

Edit...to add, I'm running Icon Overland 3" Springs and Remote CDCV Shocks in the rear.
I know this is an old thread, so a lot of the pictures are no longer available ... but I'm particularly interested in the side view and the customization you had done to bring the tire in a little closer to the tailgate. Any chance I could get you to update those pictures?

Do you have one of these? If so, how's the build quality, wobble, etc?

it should be at my house any day now...i got the Knucklebone version not the swingout they offer. the customer service was 10/10 and i looked into various first hand account of them and all were positive - no wobbles etc.

the one i got has a hinge for opening the hatch btw...theres a guy with a red 5th gen that has reviewed it somewhere. ill look for the testament.

Interesting ... why did you opt for the knucklebone instead of the swingout?

the cost paired with strong reviews. it hinges nicely to like 40*, not all the way to the ground (see the review link at the images.) i think it looks pretty clean too, ordered mine with the license plate mount and LED too.

I am JUST seeing this. Sorry. Still want those pics? I'll be removing mine in the next couple of days so can snap some. I went 4x4 Labs rear bumper. The Wilco has been FLAWLESS but am going on a 3+ month expedition and needed more storage options.

Thanks ... would love to see pics if you have the time. And are you going to keep the Wilco?

I went back and forth between a Hitchgate and full bumper for months, eventually deciding on the Hitchgate. And I'm very happy. A few weeks after installing it I took it up to Windrock for the Appalachian Toyota Roundup, and was happy to see that it didn't hinder me at all--it never prevented me from doing any obstacle I wanted to try, and I only nudged it a couple of times. Now, someone who was into more extreme stuff may have a different opinion, but I never had any issues.

I made my own license plate rack, as well as a tool holder for an ax and shovel. I'm happy with it.

MrEMan...here are some pics. Unfortunately the locks holding the recovery and the Wilco in the stock tow hitch were seized and unable to get a pic of the extra hole I drilled. To get it closer I drilled one extra hole up near the cross portion. But doing that I had to have 3" extension welded on my stock hitch on the backside so the wedge clamp on the Wilco would grab enough. Then when I had all the custom work done for the TredPros and shovels I had him cut the round wheel mount portion and take some off and angle it. The mounts were later changed to Rotopax mounts. If I can get those locks out I'll snap a pic. Sorry couldn't be more help.

For some reason the pics aren't showing up, but I appreciate the extra information!

Looks nice. I ordered mine last week with the with the additional lower hitch and the license plate holder and light wiring. I have some HD spray on bedliner I am going to paint it with.

yeah, its def beefy and well made. i was going to bedliner it like my sliders but the temps were a bit too low for it to spray right. i ended up using a black spraypaint, 3 or 4 coats with it pretty much disassembled.
