Holy crap, more LBJ failures!

I will have to admit, I'm a Facebook user.

I'm a member of the group 3rd Gen 4runner Mafia, and just in the last 8 hours, I've seen 2 posts of LBJ failures. In the last 3-4 months I've seen a dozen. As 4runner enthusiasts we are all well aware of the few shortcomings of our trucks but everyone please Everyone, if you have a 3rd gen, and you've never changed your LBJ's, please do so. If you have a jack and know how to use a ratchet, pliers and a hammer, you can do it yourself. Use OEM, yes, they are a little more money but worth it! Using anything else is false economy!! For a few hundred, you eliminate the possibility of DYING, and at best, saving having to replace racks, UCA's, UBJs, CV's, tires and yes, LBJ's!!!!

But yea, I have no idea how old the LBJ's are on my new Limited. I'll be changing them out (and the radiator) as soon as the weather gets warmer. Until then fingers crossed!

I post our videos on 3rd Gen Mafia. There is a ton of immature BS on that Facebook page but there's also a lot good dudes on there too. When somebody posts looking for help on something, a good percentage of the comments are people just trying to be funny and talking shit.

I think there's a decent amount of the people on that page that wrench on their 3rd Gens because I get a pretty good response every time I post a new video that [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] and I made. So, even though I find some of the posts annoying, I guess it works for me because it gives me another group I can share our videos with.

But, hands down, T4R is the best site for 4runner owners.

The quality of posts and information just isn't there. It's really nice to see the level of effort people put into making extremely informative and helpful posts and how-to articles on this forum, whereas the facebook groups are often nothing more than shit talking and the same basic questions being asked over and over again.

Facebook groups are good for arranging local meets and such but the format just doesn't work for sharing any sort of useful technical information. I really hope that awesome forums such as this one don't become a thing of the past!

This forum is doing great. I've seen lots of forums die over the years because of low traffic due to people moving to social media. I spend most of my online time here & check in on FB a few times a day. FB is the best way for me to communicate with friends & family. My local FB Toyota & 4Runner groups are great, no BS, just helping each other, buying/selling & setting up wheelin' events. These national groups have too many people & good posts get pushed down. No nobody scrolls down to see whats been posted in the past. You said it, the format sucks. Here we have a huge database to pull info from.

The newer demand for instant access to social media platforms is really challenging forums. It really is sad to see one of best ways to spread good information and what helped build the Internet into what it is today (both nudie pics and non pics) is being left behind by so many people today. They think they are inventing something new but are actually usually reinventing something that has already been done on a forum.

Its become a rather toxic environment on the mafia page. I left for many of the same reasons as anyone else. That is not the place for beginners like myself to ask questions. At least the forums provides a searchable database with actual answers instead of BS trolls left and right.

Interesting responses!! I agree that 3rd Gen 4Runner Mafia has a lot of ridiculous twits, but it also has interesting videos and serious enthusiasts....I can choose to ignore the crap and checkout the stuff that grabs my attention! If I flip on the tube, I'm forced to sit through pharmaceutical ads, ads about feminine protection and toothpaste!! I fail to see that as more entertaining. I stumbled across it as well as BC 4Runners, 4Runners4Life and 4x4 Nicaragua among others. (I might add, 4x4 Nicaragua has some great jungle crawling vids!) Its called entertainment! I stopped watching regular crappy network TV sometime ago and now fill my former TV time with something I'm specifically interested in. I see this as a more interesting use of my down time than watching some meaningless TV sitcom!

I don't really see our forum competing with Facebook! They're not the same thing.... Facebook allows you to talk shit with your friends and provide some superficial entertainment.... T4R.org is where I go for help, provide backyard advice, and research future projects!!! My interest and time spent on T4R hasn't waivered since I joined!!!
I digress.....

The point of my post was to try and illustrate the seriousness of our LBJ issue and urge anyone that hasn't dealt with them, to do so....

I am late to the party as usual, but I like the T4R forum because as a newbie y'all have helped me tremendously and not made me feel like a total idiot loser for not knowing stuff.
I can see how FB can get *****y and very high school. I'm on a few pages and they get like that and I dump the page. I like good sarcasm and talking shit as well as the next guy.
still figuring out the forum and finding stuff is a bit tough at times, but the beauty of it is it's searchable and great info once you find it. Such as the button on the 4WD on my limited I didn't know about locking the differential and all that. I learn a lot here!

ok now go grab a beer and make me laugh!

From what I understand, the spring and strut applies pressure between the frame and the LCA. This arrangement applies pressure outwards, pulling the BJ's apart. The weight of the vehicle applies opposite pressure. as the suspension moves, the spring forces the LBJ apart and in turn the weight of the vehicle forces the joint together, with most of the force acting on the LBJ; the UBJ only stabilizing the perpendicular movement of the wheel. Therefore, replacing the UCA/UBJ will modify the geometry (with a lift) and provide greater stability but I don't think will change the nature of the forces acting on the LBJ. Just my opinion.....
I've only heard of a couple of UBJ failures. One of which was a result of a LBJ failure...
There is a guy that created a uniball LBJ... and posted it here. Not sure how it turned out--- last I read he was working on sealing it with a rubber boot.

Welcome! T4R.org is a real resource, with some truly talented and creative members--- without the BS! I've received infinite support and advice, discovered some great ideas and learned a ton over the years----its like your local library.... and FB groups----well, more like MAD magazine and the National Enquirer rolled into one... Like I said, more like entertainment!

Amen, on this site being the best for knowledge and experience with our runners good folks also.

I ran my 96 LBJ's for 330k miles or so, bought 2000 with 74k mi on it, little old lady drove it to church, well kept. Put first lift on it 01 with limit straps. As LBJ failures became more known I started performing the FSM LBJ check anually and more often as time went on to a point where I would check them every oil change. When I changed them 7-17 I did FSM check and they were at outer limit. I've always wondered why I was able to get what milage I did, was it because of using limit straps for so long or what? I do use it/ not abuse it for wheeling.
Would be interesting to put together a list of failures with info for usage, milage, setup etc.
I purchased a 01 198k mi 2-17 driven by College Prof. You could tell he never used 4wd engaement time took forever. Did the FSM check LBJ's well within spec, haven't change yet @ 204k now.
Some will say I was crazy for running them that long for sure, it was a long term experiment.

I haven't seen the question asked, but I'd be curious to know how many of the LBJ failures happened on 3rd party LBJ's...

A few have speculated as to whether there is a difference in failure rates with lifted trucks. I read a thread here a couple of years back where the poster had made an effort to answer that question, and the result of his research, was that there was no statistical evidence.

Most of the 4r and Taco LBJ failures seem to be similar situations, but vary in nature--- bolt failures, knuckle failure and ball failure (where the 'ball' broke off) . The situations vary a little from: low speed "..I just exited the freeway..." entering a parking lot or turning on a residential street. I saw one here where the member was actually doing a fair rate of speed. Luckily, I've heard of no serious injuries from members. Yotatech also has a fair number of recorded failures, a few Tacos, T100's and Sequoia's. The worst pictures I've seen online were rollovers --- a couple of Sequoia's and a T100. Not sure why Sequoia failures seem to be worse, maybe the weight of the front end?
