has anyone tried using possibly the home link switch from the gx470? my dad has the car and that whole console looks just like the one in my 4runner. i'm to afraid to pull it out becuase i dont want my dad to kill me lol. the benefit with this iwould think is a couple things. if you do the blue tooth mod, this has the microphone built right into the sunglass holder. and also there is a switch to make the 2 lights work with or without the door. if you know what i mean... just a thought!

Got mine from partznet. Came with new clips. I also did the driver side grab handle at the same time.

I have a newer craftsman opener, don't know if it is rolling code. I followed the instruction manual, used an existing remote.

Unfortunately I did not have the same luck as everybody else when taking the stock plate out. I pulled from the windshield side with both hands, pulled hard and steady, and the two plastic clips/prongs that are on the tan section by the windshield side that plug into the black piece broke off. Now that the tan piece separates from the black piece (which I believe has the metal clips to the roof), I can't get the black/roof side piece to pull off from the roof where the two metal clips must be (again, as the tan piece where you pry it off separated from the black piece).

Am out out of luck? At this point, I am sure I could get the thing out, but I know it is going to be in more that one piece at this point (which I don't really care as I would be replacing it with a new homelink one anyway).

For those of you (which is the majority) that successfully took the original panel out no problem, see any problems with keeping to force the thing out, even if it breaks into pieces and put the new one in? Is there any risk of breaking anything else or other connectors on the roof etc., or should I just go for it and start prying away the rest of the panel and replace it with the homelink?

From reading the posts, It seems like I am the only one that has run into this problem, any suggestions would be appreciated.

When you open the sunglass holder, there are two little rubber pieces that looks like the locations of where the metal clips would be on the other side to attach it to the roof. Could I possibly use vise grips to latch on to each one of these and just pull down to remove the plate?

The plastic prongs and metal clips all mount into the steel roofline above the headboard. The only thing that is attached when ripping out is the hook up cable. That black backing was attached by screws on the component, you must have just seperated the two sections of the unit.

No reason to believe that destroying the old one will hurt you in any way. My old one is currently collecting dust in my garage. Biggest pain is making sure the metal clips come out also.

Can't remember, but the rubber locations you are seeing might be where the velcro attachments are??

Only two plastic prongs and metal clips attached to metal, destroy away while protecting your cable.

I finally got the plate out. Had to do it in two pieces as the tan component piece separated from the black backing that attaches to the roof. Once the tan piece was separated, I was able to use a screw driver and pry the black backing from the roof.

The metal clips did come off and stayed up inside where the holes in the roof were. I used a wire with a flexible magnet attached to it to get them back out. Not sure why mine was so difficult to remove. I literally had to pull until the tan componet separated from the black backing, then remove the black backing.

All off now, and new homelink on the way. Thanks for the help.
