Hood Scoops

Haveing looking at the new 4runner sport edt. the hood scoop doesnt apear to be useful.. i mean theres just a peace of plastic in there, so it blocks all air.

does it serve any real fundimental purpose? If not, i was thinking that some plastic molding or something could be used to direction the air into the air intake.

just a thought, any ideas/comments?

Yes, I think it could be done rather easily. And then the entire engine bay would turn into a dirt pit; a mud pit when it rains. Remember, when you open a door, good things [air] come in, and, also, bad things [dirt, water, bugs, leaves, etc].

One may say direct the air. Ok, where? The airbox is a closed & sealed unit. You could theoretically fabricate it to receive additional air, but do it very professionally, or go back to paragraph #1. Then the ole' Why ? appears. It ain't gonna be any faster, as the computer would likely object to / offset the new imbalance.

The hood scoop is just a design exercise. I did not like it - looked a little too pro-stock to me - at first. But, like a lot of things we see these days, it grew on me. At least they chose a handsome design; many scoops over the years have been ugly.

Now if I had the supercharger, I'd have that pretty baby thowing air right down the gut! But I like my calm, quiet ride jes' like it is.

I bought the sports edition because it was a better value for the $$$$. Plus the Xtres suspension is awesome. Personnaly I like the look of the hood scoop.

You hit the nail on $ - the S.E. delivers tremendous value for the $900 above the SR5. And it was specifically the Xreas that got me there. Having alot of Yamaha racing suspension time, I wasn't buying a 4R w/o it. Well, that eliminates the SR5, right? While pricing Limiteds, I did the math on the S.E. vs the LTD, carefully factoring all the hardware difference between the two, and could not [for me] justify the $4000+ difference.

That personal decision aside, the equipment that comes standard with the S.E. package, for under $1000, is the deal of the 2004 model year.

The only purpose of the [stock] scoop is to set the S. E. model apart, strictly visual, and non-functional.

Hey, I thought those fins were used to help control the car when you got over 200 MPH. Very useful.:arrow:
 
visual... im not complaneing, but wouldn't it be nice if it did something?


I will agree, the sport edition is a great value, and has some great features. (hood scoop :D )

i saw a 3rd gen 4runner with the hood scoop, but the owner had cut 4x1 inch diameter holes in the plastic, and ran 4 hoses from the scoop to the air box...great idea and functional...cant remember the site i saw it on, but ill have a look there were a few pics posted...
 
In other countries, the 4Runner gets a Turbo Diesel engine and the hood scoop becomes functional. The hood scoop directs air on the top mount intercooler, very much like the hood scoops on the Celica Alltracs...

I also bought the SE because I like the way the hoodscoop looks. Plus I like how the SE and Limited have a monochrome theme... and yeah the Xreas is badarse...
 
I love my hood scoop. Yeah, it's not functional. But, it gives the Sport Edition a great look to distinguish it from the rest. Do I wish it were functional... well yeah... but I can deal with it just looking good for now.

I agree with the look, my wife wanted a vehicle that personified the sporty look and looked "cool". We didn't like the idea of the box with wheels look from the Honda Pilot. Our 04 4x4 V6 Sport just looks Kick A$$, and we feel go about it, and like the commercial says, when I'm in my car, I looook goood!

I just had an idea for a mod for all you Knight Rider fans out there. For those that know the show, think of Kit and his red LED light. Know where I am going with this? Let's say hypothetically someone made the very same thing, but it fit perfectly in there, and all you need to do is run a wire to a power source; would give it that nice custom touch, with a bit of cheese to it.
 
only problem is you could only use it while parked if you used the red lights. most light colors are restricted for moving and would possible invoke a moving violation/ticket if used in motion.

but its a nice idea to contemplate if you can get over the bling effect or "just doesnt look right on the 4runner" effect.
 
Bling bling effect...too funny. Okay how about in small neon the words 4 Runner in that space? Too bling bling?
 
hmm, now thats a better idea. neon i think wouldnt fit in such a small place and still be legible. probably have to go LED or backlighted and make sure its weatherproofed.

Hey - That would work! And with 364 rain days a month [I like that] you sure wouldn't have to be concerned about a dirty engine bay! Tip: take the opportunity now, to jot down the part #s from all the electronic relays, sensors, coils, etc., [ Ok if you just refer to them all as "littlethingamajiggies"] as the #s will soon wash away. The list will come in handy @ the dealer when buying replacements. You might even be able to cross reference to an underwater equivilent. :satan:
