Horn mod

I hope the horns don't drown next time it rains.

I removed both tabs almost 2 years ago and the horns still function just fine. Don't worry about it.

Turns out a request for pics of this isn't as ridiculous as it seems. So here you go TranceKrayz.

I then unbolted one horn and guess what? You don't have to break anything. They slide on and hold with a tab. Pull back the tab to remove. Reinstall at a later date if you want (why, I don't know?)

Now fully removed. Yes, they are louder without the shield (test it in a garage before and after or ask grandma for her opinion.) As was suggested this could be a regulation thing for sound level. If it wasn't required in some other jurisdiction (ie. Europe) then Toyota could just leave it off.

Went outside and spent all of about 15 minutes doing the Horn mod. Horns sounded the same before and after. I decided to leave the "splash guards" on there.

For those wanting a louder horn, instead of adding another set of factory horns you'd be better off getting a louder aftermarket one. You put two horns together that produce 115db each you only get 116db combined. I'm going to look into air horns myself.

Most upgrade horns are only 118db. Here's a bit louder air horn at 133db and comes with air compressor. It will even fill your tires.

Or the EXTREMELY loud 152 db horn. Looks like a roof mount only. I bet it's huge and amazingly loud!

Has anyone tried the 139db Stebel Nautilus Electromagnetic Airhorn or something similar? I had one on a motorcycle and it rocked! Small and compact, no external air tanks to worry about, and the relay is included. If I remember right it was around $40-$50 but you could probably find one cheaper on eBay.

Yup, I like them, it is somehting different. A little higher pitch as well.

looks to me like the tab would direct the sound in a forward direction, towards the intended imbecile ... if thats true, then removing the tab would cause the sound to travel downward, making it seem louder inside the car.

ie: i would think that pointing the horn towards one self, rather than away, would make the horn seem louder.


FWIW: In SoFLA everybody has the windows up and ac on; gomers* have hearing aids off and kids have tunes blaring (or subs buzzing so bad, you can hear their license plates rattle). If they only realized how moronic they look with sideways hats and buzzing little go carts. You really need a beatup 76 blazer and let em pull out...... horn not even needed.

*Gomer= Get Outof My Emerg Room. Typically a very old chronically sick nasty old fossil that is very ill and is ready to die..

Good find. Nice and compact and loud! I just might have to get one of those.

I have one, it's too high pitch but a friend of mine said there is a screw that you can adjust the loudness somewhere.

I pulled tabs off my 06 Tundra, only difference was they were metal. I took'em off my 4R a while ago but they came off without breaking. If we find out for sure they're beneficial I'll pop 'em back on! Wichdoctor had a great point,I may have to experiment, inside verses outside.Heck, I wouldn't want the sound directed toward the WRONG IMBECILE!:biggrin2:
