How can i get/add AWD to a Trail or SR5? Before i buy i need to know the facts.

Right now i have a Montero
2wd
AWD
4hi
4lo
and rear locker.

I really like the ability to throw the 4runner in AWD when conditions call for it.
Soon i am looking into getting a new 4runner and want to know if there is a way to get or install something that will give me AWD without getting a LIMITED.
There are just so many more things i can do aftermarket wise with a 4runner its really no comparison. Before i buy i want to know all my options.
Yes, i know many people use 4WD when its wet or snowing out..

I doubt it would be economical to do. You would need a new transfer case and possibly driveshafts. That would be the easy part. Since everything is tied in electronically it would be a nightmare to get all the correct wires, sensors, dash indicators etc.

Add some more money and upgrade it to the Limited, thats Full time 4WD.

As stated it could be done but would cost alot more then just saving up a little more and buying a Limited to begin with none of the headaches involved in the swap. The whole wiring harness is different on a Limited as well as the Torsen center diff.

What are you referring to when you say that you could put so many after market components on the SR5 aside from the AWD??? Are you thinking about pimping it out on your own? Like sound system,HD moniters,Light Effects,Rims,Game Console etc... ??? imp:

For some reason i had double vision looking through the window at night. BAD. At a red light or any light, instead of one i saw two. Really crazy when i car was coming towards me and i was two sets of lights only to converge into one set as the vehicle got closer. The bottom 1/3 of the windshield was fine.


I had an 06 Sport Ed. with a V8. LOVED IT.

I thought i read somewhere (with a Gen 3 or 4) that someone added a LSD up front among other things. I really like the 4WD system in the Montero and was hoping to get something similar, even if i have to make it that way, with a 5th Gen.
And yes, this would be a money pit for pimping..:bluejump:

Stick shift FJ has AWD and locker option, maybe get that instead.

Buy a Limited and have the dealer replace the lower body trim pieces with TE trim -- take a look at Harper7's rig. That has been done, and is far easier and cheaper than trying to add a Torsen to a TE.

Was it an OEM windshield? I had similar problems with distortion in a replacement glass. They changed it again and all was good. Don't write the 4th Gen off so fast if you liked it.
Also, have you test driven the 5th Gen to make sure you don't have the same windshield issue?
