You have full time 4WD with the V8. I/we have selectable 2WD or 4WD, which was exactly why I bought the V6.

I have to ask, what was your reasoning?

I've driven both and I notice NO difference with the new 4R. My only complaint, I can't act like a 16 year old with AWD. Even in the rain I can't get the vehicle to drift unless it's wet. And then I have to be all over it.

I thought that the speed limit was for the MAX speed you are supposed to go with it being in 4wd.

No, it's just a limit on how fast you can go and still be able to switch from 2WD to 4WD.

I hope you haven't been driving below 55mph with 4WD for the past 6 years.

The only time I am in 4wd is when it is snowy as hell out, so I dont ever think I needed to go over 60mph in 4wd! According to the little card on the sun visor, it states to "keep vehicle speed under 100kmh (60mph)." I take that as not to exceed 60mph in 4wd. It doesnt say anything about that being the speed to be below to switch INTO 4wd.

85 mph in 4WD without any problems for me last winter. Isn't it only recomended to SHIFT into 4WD under 55, but no limit for driving speed? Thats the way I read into user manual.

Can someone confirm this?

Can someone confirm that the vehicle needs to be moving in order for 4WD to engage? One time I switched to 4WD, but had to come to a complete stop at a stop sign before it could engage, and then suddenly it engaged and I felt a slight thump.

You can shift from 2hi to 4hi while moving as long as your under 62mph. Above that and you'll get a beep that simple. Too slow and it might not work.

You can drive at any speed in 4hi for as long as you want.

Yes you can save gas, changes the way it handles. Dont really have a "reason" that I can think of.

I think you get a few more mpg city and highway.

False, the v8 has always had significantly more torque. It's even more notable with the 5 speed as opposed to your 4 speed.

V8 has upwards of 25% more torque in low rpm ranges. 90% of it available before 1800rpm.

I think when the '03 came out, here were the numbers:

V6 - 235HP, 245ft-lbs
V8 - 245HP, 270ft-lbs

We're not talking about 100+ more in either category like how some pickups have between the V6 and V8 versions.

Wrong again. Your numbers are wrong for both engines.

Google them.

Torque on v8 is 50+ more.

Performance wise 2005 vs 2006-09 engines are exactly the same (i.e. no change in acceleration times, etc).

How about back to the topic of 4WD? If I can never switch to 4HI going faster then 5MPH. Even going at 5MHP, it's still hit and miss. I would say I may be able get it into 4HI one of of ten tries. The only sure way to get it into 4HI is to drive in reverse slowly.

Any guess why my 4Runner is behaving in such way?

That's right!

I knew in the back of my mind while typing that I bought the '03 that it had more HP, but a little less torque compared to the V8.

The only real difference I recall when reading comparisons back then was the 5 spd transmission is supposedly a bit smoother, which I didn't care for as I preferred the option to switch from 2WD to 4WD.

And yes, my V6 does have the VVT-i.

I stand corrected. I re-read the card on my visor, and it does say those are "shifting" instructions. WOOHOO! 4wd here I come.
